An Amazing Journey full of pride and passion. This book tells the journey of a young lad from Oldham who goes on to achieve great things throughout his military career. It is written in such a way that it celebrates success and lays out a clear path of ambition but at the same time the realistic aspects of life kick in and stories of deep emotion and sorrow are talked about. The realisation that depression can strike us all is covered in a really honest way with no punches pulled. A journey unfolds as you read this book starting from childhood which paints a picture that most can relate to with under achievement at school and no real aspirations about the future. The saviour in the story is the harsh structure of the military and the ability to fit in and meet the expectations required to progress up the promotion ladder. The book also states quite clearly that a long successful military career does not necessarily mean that you will have a successful transition into civilian life and that your dreams and aspirations can be taken away from you at any stage by things totally beyond your control. The author has presented his journey through life in a very honest and realistic manner and should be deemed as an inspirational role model for us all.

I really loved reading this book called "The Best Loser". I bought it as I had been suffering from mild depression myself. I loved the way Mark told the story and I could really relate to a lot of the content. As a child I think I had similar experiences.
The book starts by outlining the reason for the book title and takes you back to his early army days with the royal fusaliers and the company boxing championships.
Then the book moves on to tell the reasons that led to a very dark period in his life after leaving the army and the way he dealt with it.
After this the book moves back and forth between family tragidies his childhood and lots more about his time in the army, from the day he joined to the day he left.
I heartily reccommend this book to anyone.

I worked along side Mark I have always found him to be honest houmourours dedicated and hard working. A proud man who achieved great things in the army. I know not of anyone who has a bad word to speak of him in fact the very mention of his name and indeed his brother Paddy raises a huge smile to all that have had the absolute pleasure to have worked with him served with him drank with him or even just spent some time in his company. It takes guts to admit to depression I know I too have been there. Even more when you are an Ex Regimental Sergeant Major. Enjoyed the book emphasise with the book. I do believe though you. Can never beat the big black dog. I respect this man and hold him in the highest regard. Mark Mooney you are a Fusilier legend my friend.

This is one of those books that is very difficult to put down, it is sincere, heartfelt and very brave. It must have been difficult and painful to re visit some of the life experiences and memories that make this book so engaging.
There are so many instances and references that only existed in the sixties / seventies and I challenge anyone in their mid to late fifties not to be taken back to their childhood.
The author might be the best loser, but to any readers, a hero. Keep a tissue or two handy.
