Hot on the heels of 2008's successful "The Best of 2000 AD" comes Prion's latest sci-fi comic strip offering. Judge Dredd is the future's most famous law enforcement officer bar none. He has graced the pages of the generation-defining cult sci-fi comic "2000 AD" for over 30 years and now also features in his own "Judge Dredd Megazine". "The Best of Judge Dredd" features a superb selection of the best strips that Dredd has starred in, from the historical (the first ever Dredd strip) to the definitive (America), and including the weird (Otto Sump), wonderful ("The Judge Child", "The Cursed Earth") and downright scary ("PJ Maybe").

by the same people that bought us "the best of 2000ad" comes Judge Dredd's turn.

Featuring some one off strips from yesteryear like the first puplished dredd tale it also gives tasters of classic epics such as the judge child quest and more recently "origins" to hopefully have the new reader wanting more which i heartily recommend you do (theres 30 years of stuff to catch up on out there).

it also has some complete strips "the fink" being one of my all time favourites from the old days and "america" which is arguably regarded as one if not the best dredd tales ever.

I was surprised and disappointed that "judge death" or "judge death lives" were'nt included as they stand the test of time and really made Judge Dredd serious with scary atmospheric art by brian bolland and a quite horror oriented story .

Presented in a big coffee table book hardcover it is gorgeous to look at with cover art by carlos ezquerra

i HIGHLY recommend this book to all comic book fans young old and inbetween . Gunfights and black satirical humour

and no stallone in sight .

2000AD is unique among Britsh comics in that it has grown up with it's audience. Unique in that unlike most comic characters Dredd is aging (I dread the day he stops judging) The stories in this omnibus reflect this to some extent. The earlier stories are geared for a younger audience, gung-ho heroics and straight forward morality, but as they go on they get darker and the morality gets more shades of grey. Any omnibus will leave things out (no taster for my fave The Pit)but the stories here are great for someone new or to dip into, I had forgotten about the legendary Otto Sump. Buy this!

The Best of "Judge Dredd"

I write this as someone who, even in middle age, still buys what he brought as a Child. I grew up with 2000AD and Judge Dredd in particular.
So, when I heard through the Internet that there was going to be a "Best of" book I thought that that would be something of interest to me.

Now, having purchased the said book, I was a little disappointed. Not that they are old stories, of course they are, it is Best of album after all. The disappointing thing to me is that the Book, just like "the Best of 2000ad"
The Best of 2000AD  is not very well structured. The whole book seemed to meander is a somewhat pointless fashion.
Personal opinion, but that's how I feel

Brought back fond memories.

Just before I start, I purchased this from a high street store so this review is no reflection on Amazon, simply the book itself.

The title of the book is a bit of a misdenomer 'The best of Judge Dredd' - I love Dredd and have always wanted to get a couple of story collections so thought this was a perfect start. Starting through I was not disappointed - fantastic art, great story lines, fab one-liners. Then I got to The Cursed Earth and was reading avidly through until pg 46 where the chapter ends to be told "That's it for our first Cursed Earth extract. Pick up the story in Rebellion's The Complete Case File 02"... what?? A quick Amazon search found I'd have to buy another book to complete this story! This has happened a few times and there is no reference to this idea on the front cover nor in the introduction (please point out if I am wrong).

Not all of the stories are like this but it's a bit of a pain just to be getting into a great story just for it to cut out. Was a bit miffed at this as I wished I'd have got one of these complete case files instead. And I paid less than the price advertised here.

I'd recommend this for diehard Dredd fans only and to get a casefile instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST READ COLLECTION!

Best of Dredd? Well that is a very hard title to use as ALL Dredd is great! This is a very nicely collected group of Dredd stories that will leave the new comer salivating for more, and the wise old Dredd fan time to reflect on just how many excellent tales of the Judge are out there. If you are a Dredd fan you'll want this in your collection as it is a great wide view of the character all under two covers; and if you are just getting into Dredd.....well this is a "must read" that will hook you forever! FUN READ!
