The other day I bought a copy of The Message: The Best of Grandmaster Flash & was surprised to find that their three greatest singles ('The Message', 'White Lines' and The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel) were basically all there was to Grandmaster Flash's career.
However, the upside to this is that these three songs are already on *this* album & (although one of the mixes is a little off) it is testament to the skillful selection of songs on this compilation that the wheat and the chaff are so neatly separated.

First thing to say about this album is that it is taken from a British perspective of US Hip-Hop. Hence you will find songs on here that were popular in the UK, but barely scratched the surface of the US (e.g. CD1 Tracks 1-3 - 'It's Like That' by Run DMC, Jump Around by House of Pain & track 3 - 'Renegade Master '98' by Wildchild).
That said, once CD1 gets into its flow and stops trying to make itself saleable, it really draws out some amazing anthems that really grow on you over time.

As an example, there is the 'De La Soul' tracks on the album - 'Say No Go' and 'Eye Know'. As someone who didn't know De La Soul from Adam, it took me a while to fathom these tracks, but I'm so glad I did as the results are very rewarding.
As for more obscure tracks,

at first i was of the same opinion - a few classics surrounded by turkeys - but after a few listens, i loved all of them, with only a very few exceptions. and if you dont like "luniz - i've got five on it", then you dont like old skool. having said that, i will put a couple of old eric-b and rakim albums on my wish list.

To be fair, it's not going to be the most up to date hip hop album given that it was released in 2001 but as a classics album it's pretty good and still stands up i have to say. Also very good value for the amount of tracks so i would definitely recommend it as an 'ipod filler'.

There are a lot of classics on this album although someone thought it would be a good idea to put a few of the more recent tracks on it to catch the youth market. The old classics definatley outweigh the new rubbish though!
