Top Customer Reviews

By Peter Uys HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 22 Jun. 2006
Format: Audio CD
This compilation covers some highlights from Desmond Dekker's career that goes right back to the 1960s. It is not comprehensive but contains some of his greatest hits like It Mek, The Israelites and You Can Get It If You Really Want that were huge hits in the UK. It also displays a variety of styles like ska, rocksteady and bluebeat. My favourites include the aforementioned tracks plus You've Got Your Troubles, Shanty Town, I Believe, Problems and The More You Live. Best Of is a very enjoyable album of tuneful and bouncy songs from one of the greatest Jamaican masters. Another great one is his Greatest Hits collection that I highly recommend.

The music is 5/5 but sound quality in general is not great - 3/5 for that so I've averaged the two out here. I did own this compilation once before and when I decided I'd like to hear him again, I went straight for it... it seems (from what I've read online) that the original mastertapes of DD's have been found, locked away in a vault! I can only guess how wonderful those will sound and want a collection similar to this, released like yesterday - and I will/would buy it as soon as it comes to my attention. Also, I don't know how this would compare to other current compilations as it seems they can be very variable. With all this in mind, I am very happy to have this again and the track list I am sure would be very hard to top.

I'm not the greatest reggae or ska fan (as far as the latter goes, I'm more for what I grew up with... The Specials, The Beat and Madness I still adore) but as most will say I have some Marley and he was fantastic; Third World is another I've always liked a lot and the Trojan Box sets are great (especially the Dub ones)... so now you perhaps have something of a picture of where my preferences lie and whatever the genre is (or genres are) that you favour, I say that a bit of Desmond Dekker in any serious music fan's collection is a must. Why shouldn't it be this CD in that case? :)

Great CD, it summarizes Mr Dekker quite well, whats on the cd has been remastered and so often sounds better then the original in terms of quality.

if your after a summary this is a good cd, otherwise buy the anthology.
