Pretty self-explanatory stuff, this, since Best of Bowie collects most of Bowie's hits and a few of his more fetishised songs onto two CDs, rendering previous compilations--notably 1990's ChangesBowie--redundant. Of course, it's fantastic. For this is Bowie's pop genius shrink-wrapped: music notable for both its pretension and its accessibility, brimming with unignorable power and bespangled absurdity. Racing through these 39 songs from "Space Oddity" to "Slow Burn" (from 2002's relative return-to-form Heathen), the surprise is how coherent they sound next to each other. For someone so often portrayed as an artistic shape-shifter, it's the consistency of Bowie's vision that's most apparent, how he stamps his identity on every trend he comes across.

Like the Rolling Stones' similarly enjoyable 40 Licks, things do get a bit sticky towards the end of Disc Two, though there's mercifully nothing from the two Tin Machine albums. Obsessives should note, too, that the tracklisting of Best of Bowie varies from country to country: the albums have been compiled according to the most popular songs in each territory. Wonder which lucky place got "The Laughing Gnome" included on their version? --John Mulvey

Bowies untimely death, as with that of Glen Frey, suddenly reminded me of how incomplete my CD collection still is. There are tracks that I never realised were originally Bowie songs, and many I'd forgotten altogether. As a soundtrack of a considerable part of my life, Its criminal I hadn't bought this before. R.I.P. David, you have left a truly amazing musical legacy. Thanks.

David never sounded so good & this album is good tribute to the late great superstar we all loved so much. The sound quality on this double disc package is as good as they come & a real bargain price as well.

Nothing more enjoyable than playing this from the start all the way through, loud & on a lazy sunday, really takes me back to my youth & those glory days of the 70's...How i so wish I could live it all again & with Bowie as the soundtrack!

This effectively does what is says on the tin!!

Pretty much self-explanatory; this is a Best Of Bowie's career from the early 70s to the mid 90s. All the old favourites are here, alongside some of the less well-known hits, so this is the perfect introduction to Bowie for the uninitiated.

It would probably be nice if an updated/expanded version of this existed (containing material from his mid-60s Deram period and latter day stuff), but this is a fantastic overview of Bowie at his best.

I just cannot stop playing this cd. It's just too difficult to pick a favourite track. The Jean Genie just has to be played on the highest volume in the car. Life on Mars lyrics are just too incredible. I am now in my late forties and really starting to regret not being born a tad earlier. But when I look back, of course I see that Bowie was always there. In the clothes that I was dressed in my my parents as a child, and the influence in all of the music I loved through the 70s and 80s. Bowie really must have touched so many people and yet in terms of his level of creativity and brilliant mind, there seems to be few to touch him. He was ahead of his time. I wonder whether in another 20 years time, we will realise how ahead of its time black star is too. If you want to buy a good Bowie cd but not sure where to start, well this Best of Bowie cd is a great place to begin. Love it!

I ordered this for a friend, who had a renewed interest in David Bowie after his recent sad and untimely death. It is a selection of Bowie's most well-known and commercially successful songs, and is a great collection to have in the car or at home. Hardcore Bowie fans will probably look elsewhere and are more likely to pick up individual albums, but this is a great introduction to people unfamilar with David Bowie's work (although there can't be many in the world!) or for someone that just wants an easy and convenient way to enjoy music spanning the most prolific periods of his career.

i bought this album about a year ago, mainly thanks to his videos popping up all over vintage tv. i had always liked David Bowie, but i didn't realise how many of his songs i knew and loved until i received this cd. 39 career spanning tracks, and not a duff song in site - from his spacetastic classics such as 'starman' and 'space oddity', his duets with mick jagger, queen, and one of my favourites 'hello spaceboy' with the pet shop boys, and not forgetting his flirtation with drum n bass on one of the later tracks 'little wonder' infact its just classic after classic and theres even a few that couldn't be squeezed on to an already jam-packed collection

most of these songs were originally released before my era, but are so big and have spent such a long time in our lives it makes it simple to remember that David Bowie is one of the biggest game changers in music of all time. his unique musical style, and other worldly voice have taken rock, glam, indie, drum n bass, pop and numerous other styles.. fused them all together and became something that stands above many other artists, and influencing many more.. add to this his own unique take on fashion, blurring the lines of gender and ushering in new eras of trends - and you find yourself holding an album from one of the biggest game changers in pop culture of all time.

his untimely passing, has sent shock waves of sadness the world over.. but one things for sure, this musical legend can rest peacefully knowing his amazing back catalogue will live on and prop up an ever ailing music world forever.. and his musical influence will be felt for generations to come. if you are just starting to dip your toe into David Bowie's music, this is definitely the place to start. - and when you find your favourites it will help you find a place to start looking for those classic albums that changed the world of music forever :)

I would give this CD 10 stars if i could, its that good, i have been a fan since my teenage years, Heroes & Ashes to ashes are up there in my all time top 10, a truly original & innovative songwriter & performer & i doubt we will ever see or hear from anybody like him ever again! This collection spanning 5 decades shows he was at the top of the game all through that time, to be able to maintain that amount of quality over that period of time will never be repeated, I will miss him!

R.I.P. Mr Bowie you where ahead of your time and this album shows it, the songs he wrote in 70s - 80s could be played now and would not sound dated, not a bad track on this album. A must even if you never listen to Bowie before best £6 spent thank you Amazon
