Up to the time of this compilation (1992), Belinda had sixteen British hits of which fourteen made the top fifty and all those are included. The other two (Mad about you, Love never dies) are omitted in favor of another track (I plead insanity). Of the hits, five (Heaven is a place on earth, I get weak, Circle in the sand, Leave a light on, We want the same thing) made the UK top ten, with the first-named going all the way to number one, just as it did in America. Live your life be free, another outstanding song, made number twelve in the UK nut none of the others made the UK top twenty.
This compilation is the definitive UK hits collection, though the omission of Mad about you (a major USA hit) may disappoint some fans. It's not the only great track missing, as Belinda did a superb cover of I feel free (originally recorded by Cream), but that wasn't a UK hit either. Nevertheless, Belinda's UK and USA hits were mostly the same songs so the track selection will satisfy most people from whatever country.
If you enjoy mainstream pop music, you may enjoy this even if the eighties aren't your favorite decade.
This official 1992 compilation from Virgin Records topped the UK charts, and contains all of the tracks you'd expect in a Belinda Carlisle hits collection. Opening with 'Heaven', her other 80s chart successes are here with 'I Get Weak', 'Circle In The Sand', 'Leave A Light On' and 'La Luna'. Further success came in the 90s with 'Summer Rain', 'Runaway Horses', 'Vision Of You' and 'We Want The Same Thing'. The last aforementioned six tracks were taken from her 'Runaway Horses' album, and five of them made the top 40, whilst the other just missed the charts by one.
The album only contains material starting from the 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth' album and finishes with the 1991 album 'Live Your Life Be Free', all of the singles from that record are presented in this set, including the beautiful 'Half The World'.
These are her hits that Belinda had during her commercial peak. although she had further success with another albums and singles as the '90s drew on, it is the recordings on 'Best of Belinda (Volume 1)' that are best remembered by the public, and the most prized amongst her fans.
This is a lovely collection of relaxing and energetic pop songs from one of the best female artists to emerge from the 1980s.
If so, it was a fortunate fall indeed. Sure, The Go-Go's were good looking, but their music sucked! :D
"The Best of Belinda Volume 1" is a curiously titled greatest hits album released in Europe and Australia in 1992. There is no second volume, so the title is presumably a kind of bragging.
All the songs punks and alternative rockers love to hate are included: "Heaven is a place on earth", "Circle in the sand", "Leave a light on", "Summer rain", "I get weak"... Should I continue? With a volume one like this, we probably don't even need a sequel!
This is an album from a time when pop songs actually had melodies, refrains and recognizable lyrics. Then something happened. The current MTV scene makes my head spin and stomach turn. I mean, where's the *music*?
Belinda Carlisle's songs aren't particularly deep. But yes, pop heaven probably is a place on earth...
