The BBC recordings by Fairport Convention has been issued in a boxset and previously as an individual CD named "Heyday". "Heyday" adds pretty good covers by Fairport on american music folk, rock and pop, including pieces by Joni Mitchell, Dylan, Cohen, underrated genius Gene Clark and even the Everly Brothers. This CD instead focuses on the original songs by Fairport Convention itself. As a matter of fact, the expanded edition of "Heyday" in CD incorporates most of the live material included herein and sound quality is the same. However, some seminal pieces here are a great addition. One of my favorites is the live reading of 'Meet on the Ledge', where not only Sandy Denny but also the superb Iain Matthews shine on vocals. Even if you have the "Heyday" albums this set adds value with songs missing there. As a bonus you get the live recordings Sandy Denny made when rejoining the band in the seventies - sadly, seminal guitarist Richard Thompson kept out in these final recordings of Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention-. The sound is uneven throughout the album, given the recording sessions have diferent dates and personnel. The material shows the best period of Fairport, where Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson are the outstanding figures, but you come to apreciate and admire the rest of the musicians - the rhythm section is quite good and the fiddle is very well played -, especially the vocals by Matthews which are cristaline. I suggest buying both "Heyday" - as first choice - and then going for this one. They complement each other, even with the repeated tracks. About the boxset I guess it includes the period without Denny, which I enjoy less even taking into account the quality of these musicians.Read more ›

This is a disc of high quality recordings from John Peel, Symonds, Stuart Henry shows etc from 1968 to 1974. Five tracks have already appeared on the extended Heyday CD but that leaves I think eleven classic tracks.Personal highlights are Meet on the Ledge with quality vocal from Matthews, Sir Patrick Spens beautifully performed and sung by Sandy, Now be Thankful with the guitar part standing out better than on the recorded version, and a superb John the Gun from the 1974 band--a song which has a certain resonance today. If you think like me that the best live performances are often better than the results in the studio then you will like this. All for the price of a Whopper meal....
