By Victor HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 24 Jan. 2011
Format: Audio CD
Albert King was an important and influential figure in blues history. Often written off as a bit of a BB King copyist (both in his own name and the similar sounding name for his guitar), his was a unique guitar sound and an even more unique voice. His guitar work was different to anyone else's simply because he was left handed and played a normal right handed instrument upside down. His distinctive vocal growl and howl was a perfect blues voice.

Collected here is the best of the work King recorded with Stax. Moving away from the pure blues sound and blending in a broad dash of soul and funk, these are recordings are a bit different to his usual sound, but pretty damned good nonetheless.

There is still straight blues to be found here, with `Born Under a Bad Sign', but it is funk that dominates.

It is an excellent overview of this particular era of King's career, but not a best of covering his whole career or his big hits. You will need to look elsewhere for that. 4 stars.

Great album! This album kicks off in fine fashion with King's hit "Born Under A Bad Sign", complete with a bass riff that nearly knocked out the circuits in my car's stereo speakers. With 4 steamin' live tracks, King manages to whip the crowd up into a frenzy. Includes an instrumental cover of James Brown's "Cold Sweat", and Albert's funky-as-you-like "Flat Tyre" is one for the car. Once you have listened to this, go get the "Born Under A Bad Sign" album. Cool.
