About Berlitz

Berlitz has helped millions of men, women and children speak new languages, and its cultural consultants have assisted thousands of organisations in reaching across cultural barriers successfully. The company's origins date back to 1878 when language tutor Maximilian D. Berlitz developed a new method of teaching people. His approach, which he developed into the Berlitz Method, was so successful it became the gold standard of language instruction and led to what would become a globe-spanning organisation.

I had no great hopes of learning anything from this program, but I've always wanted to know more about Oriental languages. So it seemed a useful thing to try, especially since these two are supposed to be introductory courses. I'm not a stranger to foreign languages, being able to get by happily in French, and I'll not starve or lack shelter in Italy, Spain or Germany.

I had no difficulty in installing the programs on a well-endowed XP Windows machine, although it blue-screened when I opted for 'later' instead of 'restart', and I needed to hold down the On/Off button after losing patience. The CDs play fine.

The Mandarin lost me completely, and the learning method did not help. I am told, by people who know, that one needs to sing Mandarin - I cannot sing. So it was with trepidation I tried the Japanese. Amazingly, it makes sense, good sense, although the 'chuck into the deep end' learning technique is a bit off-putting at first. But the way Japanese is structured makes the Berlitz system work for me, while it did not with Chinese.

Now, the weak link in the learning process is not the Japanese course, but my memory and application, and worst of all my abysmal pronunciation (I keep hearing hysterical laughter leaking though my mic/headphones from the other side of closed doors).

After this first month I've completed a quick first pass through the Japanese, and I expect it will be yet several months more before I can use any of it, but it seems very promising, and I'm still finding it interesting. Now to do it properly. Thank you Berlitz.

Why just Three Stars? Because the Mandarin was impossible, and there are only about two and a half thousand Japanese words and phrases to learn. I'd have liked more depth to it.

Despite having never been to Japan, I've always had a craving to go there - Tokyo especially.
And now I've booked up my holiday for next year, I thought I should try to speak a little Japanese.

I'm only a newbie with this Berlitz package, but I think I'm moving along okay, not fast, not slow. I'm definitely still a beginner.
I'm somewhat dubious about learning solely from a software package, but I think this could be a discredit to Berlitz, because there really is an awful lot on the package. The practice conversations are helpful, although I'm sure my accent is getting in the way! (Luckily there are pronunciation techniques to follow!) I will persevere.

The narration throughout (my current use) has been clear and not at all confusing. I'm definitely picking up some skills, even if they aren't exactly amazing. (My Japanese friend has laughed at me a few times, when i don't quite get thing right.)

The audio course can be installed on your ipod, which is great for learning on the go. (Although I don't like the idea of talking out loud in public.) Sadly, I get the Tube to work, so chances of using this feature is limited to lunch breaks or when back at home. I'm sure it's great in the car, though! I'd imagine this to be helpful to anyone with a busy schedule.

I've installed the basics on both my home and work computers, so I can try and learn something throughout the day - even if I'm just repeating tasks. The videos I've watched have been helpful - especially as you get the chance to see how words are "mouthed"... if you get what I mean. You can copy the movements to help improve your learning. Although I know find that I may be over-emphasizing certain words.

Given that I am visiting China soon, I thought I would use this product to start me off.

First drawback - learning to write is almost impossible!

I liked the way the computer progam asked you to listen to the language first, that was very useful. Overall the computer program was quite good, and I'd recommend it.

The 'on the go' iPod section is merely a list of words you are asked to repeat in different sections - e.g. Animals, Eating Out, In The Hotel, etc. with no real direction, which I couldn't really get on with

The CD section is good, buit far too short overall.

A good place to start, but you'll have to look elsewhere to advance!

The first thing I noticed about this package is that Berlitz seem to have quite an enthusiastic Marketing Dept. The cover boasts of it being a 4-disc set, which strictly speaking it is, although you're unlikely to use them all as it breaks down as 1x Windows installation CD, 1x Mac installation CD, 1x Japanese language CD & 1x Chinese (Mandarin) language CD. Also included is a manual for the software. Berlitz also say they have "the most powerful language learning system available today" - Rosetta Stone also make the same claim but since their software costs hundreds while Berlitz has an RRP of £29.99, it's unlikely I'll ever compare them!

The audio CD's only last around one hour each, so if you're looking for an audio-only course, a Collins Easy Learning set would be better value. As such, it's all about the software. There are 2 seperate programs - a system of flash cards for revision, plus the main Berlitz Learning System. The Learning System is a little overwhelming at first, mainly due to a vast array of options & not much guidance on where to begin. For this reason I feel it could benefit greatly from a structured lesson plan - the idea is that people can structure their own learning to suit their individual needs but it would have been nice to have a more clearly defined starting-point, so I could have just jumped straight in. Insead, it took a little while to find my way around.

The emphasis of the Berlitz system is to throw you straight into an 'immersion environment' consisting of videos with completely Japanese/Mandarin audio & written text (in the Latin alphabet, not Kanji) & optional games & activities.
