It should cover our needs. It's fairly extensive, covers most eventualities and the CD is a very useful back up. But as with all phrase books, it gives you phrases rather than the basis of the language. On various occasions two or three longish words are put together as a phrase, but when you look them up in the Croatian-English part of the dictionary, they're not there, though sometimes by cross-referencing you can find them out.
In fact the dictionary is a slightly weak link. It gives words like "statue", "stainless steel" and "slipper", but not "tip/gratuity" or "station". It gives "where", but not "who", "which" or "when". It seems as if "kada" means "when", but when you look it up it's translated as "bath tub"!
The "Essential" phrases (those on the CD) are a bit selective too: no "good morning" or "good evening", but "what are your plans for tonight?" and "I love you". Perhaps we have different essentials.
Having said that, this book should be satisfactory for a one week's inclusive package holiday, so I'll give it four stars.
The ' eating out' section starts with ' can you recommend a good restaurant ?' Surely what most of us want to know is how to order a couple of beers or a coffee.! The whole thing has a strangely old-fashioned feel to it, I was surprised not to find a section on hiring a porter to carry one's portmanteau.
The main reason I chose this book was because it had a CD with it. I found the CD virtually useless. I guess it does give an idea of pronunciation if you can stick with it long enough, but is simply the contents of (some of?) the book read aloud - nothing interactive, no exercises or interesting scenarios... Very tedious. I only lasted about 10 minutes on the CD. We'll be on the lookout for a better book if we visit this charming country again.
This book offers your extensive vocabulary and simple sentences on everyday tasks. The perfect book to take with you on a Croatian holiday just in case you need to report something to the police and order a meal in a restaurant. In my opinion, this booklet is certainly NOT for serious learners of this exotic language, but only casual travellers.
Oh and by the way dobar means good.
