Product Description

Product Description

In the Spring of 2011 Lee Thompson and Mark Bedford, two founder-members of Madness, convened at a rehearsal studio in Hackney with the idea of playing - and paying tribute to - the kind of music that had inspired them as teenagers. They enlisted an assortment of musicians whose playing they respected and with whom they enjoyed playing. The idea was to have fun; perhaps do a few gigs; and take it from there.
So far so good. But the project seemed to take on a life of its own. The gigs were well received and a joy to play. The next logical step was to try and capture the energy and joy of these performances on tape - old style. So the band convened at The Ironworks in Brighton, home of Mike Pelanconi - aka Prince Fatty - famed for his ability to capture the authentic sound of the Studio 1 sessions of the 1960's and 70's in Jamaica.
The results were so impressive that Dave Robinson, founder of Stiff Records, got involved and suggested a guest vocalist would add immeasurably to the mix. Enter Bitty McLean (producer of UB40 etc.) who contributed his vocal skills on a selected track single Fu Man Chu.
The Benevolence Of Sister Mary Ignatius is the result, in tribute to that excellent lady who opened & ran the 'Alpha School for Boys' which offered education and opportunity to several of the earliest Jamaican ska musicians.
It was a joy to make and heralds Summer, even in the depths of Winter. A soothing, sun dappled balm to the ears; a dance inducing treat; an escape from the everyday cares and worries of the modern world. Try it . . . you'll see!

Kix ( Lee Thompson ) and his band of merry men, recently played at the Band on the wall in Manchester and did not get a good review off some punters, which must have been more to do with night itself, because once I had listened to this debut cd I wanted more and still do. one thing I am going to do, is post a message on the madness website in chrissy boys cupboard, and demand more, although Chrissy may have visions of the demise of madness and the rise of Lee Thompson and his orchestra, But I could live with both. One down side to it, is that there are only 12 top tracks on it and once listened to, you will want more, more and more. This is a deffo must have for all ska/reggae fans.

Was lucky enough to see LTSO last week & be able to purchase CD before release date. This CD is one to buy, it is wonderfull & full of great tunes with superb musicians & the added extra of Bitty Mclean.
And if they tour again do not miss it a truly wonderfull gig.

Became interested in the album after their appearance with Jools Holland which gave me the hope that they could revive British ska from the days of two tone.
The album commences with real promise but just seems to drift into what appears more of a tribute act rather the real macoy having said that still make a good album for a summer party to bounce around the barbie

I must admit that I approached this purchase with some caution and was initially attracted by the fact that it was a collaboration by Lee Thompson, yee of Madness saxophone fame.

The album name was intriguing and the collaboration name equally so.

HOWEVER, I've not stopped listening to it since I bought it, EXCELLENT and exactly what you'd imagine a 'ska orchestra' to be.

If you like reggae and ska then you'll love this album.

There`s no doubt that Lee and his mates are good blokes and love their ska - and there are a few good tracks - but, sadly, it just doesn`t have the snap, crackle and loose groove of the best original ska tunes. This is clearly a labour of love and they`re a much better live band than this album would suggest.

What is there not to like about this infectious music?! I find myself putting it on when I don't know what I want to listen to and it always fits the bill. cant wait to play it loud in garden when the flood waters eventually subside!

So, I've been collecting reggae, ska & blue beat for around 40(!) years...I know what I like, and I know what I expect from artists with this pedigree.
The technicals are not inspiring....too many offerings are suddenly cut, as though the producer(s) had lost interest - after a few tracks I was beginning to feel the same.
The underlying sub-bass lines got lost in the mixes (I was playing it using my 2k gig system, btw, not a home 'hi-fi')
Instrumentally, it's fine/competent, if unexciting.
Vocally, when it happens, it's not at all bad, if lacking that 'enjoyment' feel.
A fairly big deal was made of the 'Soon You'll be Gone' track - I suggest you listen to the Blues Busters version, and make up your own mind.
It's a shame, because I really did want to like this, but it's a miss on a lot of points for me - if you are a fan, it's probably worth a punt, but there's a lot more stuff out there, some of it for a lot less dosh, as well.
