About the Author

Alana is a pastor's wife, homeschooling mom, self-diagnosed chicken lady, and Christian suspense author. Her novels have won awards from Women of Faith, Book Club Network, Grace Awards, Readers' Favorite, and more. Alana's passion for social justice, human rights, and religious freedom shines through her writing, and her books are known for raising tough questions without preaching. She and her family live in rural Alaska where the northern lights in the winter and midnight sun in the summer make hauling water, surviving the annual mosquito apocalypse, and cleaning goat stalls in negative forty degrees worth every second.

I thought this was a wonderful story. I know next to nothing about the plight of ordinary North Koreans - let alone that of North Korean Christians. The story was told sensitively and with great passion. The author depicts the struggle for ordinary people to survive the harsh regime, which we in the west know so little of, exceedingly well. I thought the characterisation was beautifully done. The narrator, Chung-Cha, comes across as sympathetic and very human because she is flawed and makes mistakes. The other characters are also well drawn and the narrative as a whole moves along quickly. The author keeps you guessing throughout the story as to who will survive, who will come out on top and who won't make it. An excellent debut.

For 12 year-old Chung-Cha it's her father's Christian faith that rips her family apart when, in the middle of the night, her family are taken from their home and are subjected to humiliation and torture in a North Korean prison camp. And so begins an epic journey for Chung-Cha with the novel being surprising, uplifting and at times so very sad.

The Beloved Daughter has the feel of being set in a time long past and it's shocking to realise that this is a story about modern day North Koreans. The author gives just enough details of the harsh and horrifying conditions that Chung-Cha and the other prisoners are subjected to in Camp 22 without being shocking for the sake of it. That's a difficult thing to get right and Terry manages it superbly.

The Beloved Daughter is in turn heartbreaking and moving. It's an important story about faith, love, hope, courage and survival. Terry writes in an engaging way and beautifully depicts the character of Chung-Cha and the journey she travels throughout the book. I highly recommend it.

This true story has gripped me far more than I expected how can one person suffer so much and not perish, the answer is in the focus of our life. However the lies of the enemy can alter our path it will never stand in the way of GOD's love for us. This is a very powerful read of a twelve year old girl who survived but for how long? The twists in this story would be far too much to accept in a novel but this is true......

I'm sure this book is great, but I'm not happy with the ordering system!
I clicked on the Audio version of this book for Kindle at £3.49, but it automatically ordered the regular version for Kindle at £4.99.
I couldn't see how to cancel or change the order.
I really need the audio version, but I'm not going to try and order it again. Not happy!!! 😢

The story was excellent. Very well rendered. No frills, no supersensory emotional charge. And no false happy ending. The theme of faith stayed strong throughout the book - real faith, human faith. Thank you Alana. I'd love to join your book club.

Fiction based on fact (I think) a subject that fascinates me. Well written and easy to read. Would recommend to others interested in social history.
