Belkin have a habit of changing the specification of devices, so for clarity the one I bought uses the 'Chesen Electronics Corp. PS/2 Keyboard+Mouse Adapter' chipset, ID 0a81:0205. More information if you google 'geekhack PS2 USB adapters'.
I have only used it with a keyboard, so cannot comment on it's mouse support. It's specifically says that it will not support PS/2 scanners or Zip Drives on the packaging.
The Good
Appears to fully map my keyboard, key combinations that won't work on other adapters like ALT+Print Screen (SysReq) work with this.
It appears on the host as a standard HID device, and so should work without installing extra drivers on most OSs (Linux, OS-X, Win 98+).
The Bad
It's a slow speed USB device, so it will slow down all your high speed devices on a dumb hub. This is unlikely to be a problem if you are plugging it directly into your computer or have something like a decent D-Link USB hub.
There appears to be a very slight lag, though this isn't terribly noticeable and there doesn't appear to be any character loss at high typing speeds.
Making things more complicated (which is really what I need to do), by connecting keyboard and mouse inputs from a PS/2-style GEM Adderview keyboard/mouse switch to this adapter to make the PS/2-style switch work with a USB also works, but ONLY PARTIALLY. I mention this to make people aware of possible problems that they may face if doing something more complicated than simply plugging a PS/2 keyboard and mouse into this adapter.
What I find is that any mouse will work with this setup - I can plug a PS/2 mouse into the switch, or using another adapter I can plug a USB mouse into the switch. Both work fine.
However, the same is not true with keyboards. A PS/2 keyboard plugged into the switch, with the PS/2 output of the switch going through this adapter works fine. However, a USB keyboard (in my case a Microsoft Natural USB keyboard) connected to the switch via an adapter, with the PS/2 output of the switch then going into this adapter to go into a USB port on the computer, does not work. I have tested this without the switch as well, by taking a USB keyboard, via a USB->PS/2 adapter, then back through this PS/2->USB adapter into the computer. That doesn't work either.
I don't know the details, but there seems to be something about USB keyboards that does not translate into PS/2 in such a way that it can be translated back again. Something seems to get lost along the way.
That's a nuisance, as a 4-way keyboard mouse/switch that does USB rather than PS/2 does not come cheap and I already have the PS/2 form (excellent GEM Adderview product if you still have PS/2 accessories).
However, for the simple case of a PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse, or the case of a PS/2 keyboard and a USB mouse that has been converted to PS/2 by another adapter, then this adapter works absolutely fine. For that reason, I have given this product 5 stars - it does what it is designed to do. Unfortunately, it doesn't do quite what I want it to do.
Cheaper versions work (at least I can type and move the mouse) but even these have their problems.
Oh to find one that just works perfectly!
Didn't want to waste another £60 on a new wireless keyboard and mouse, so this does the trick. Connection supports all the functions on my keyboard without any problems so far. Works out of the box without the need for any special drivers etc. Great it saved me money and i can still use my favourite keyboard.
This one just plugged in and worked first time, no problem. I've got my old keyboard back. (Trust Easy Scroll Silverline) The only 'bit' on the keyboard that doesn't work is the scroll wheel, (hence 4 stars). But I now have a scroll mouse, so no big deal. If you have a PS2 keyboard you love to use, this is the convertor for you.
But then I stumbled apon this.
It works flawlessly with my new keyboard (Microsoft Wired 500) and I'm using it now to write this review. It even works if I pull out the keyboard and put it back in again when the laptop is still on. I have however only tried it on windows Xp (Home ed Sp3) so cannot coment on how well it works with Vista and win7, another plus point is the ability to use both mouse and keyboard through a single USB port without hickups.
All in all, a good solid product from Belkin and although a little pricey is worth it for what it does.
