My only slight criticism is the length of lead on the Hub itself: I would have preferred it to be slightly longer so that it would sit completely flat on my desk, but overall it's a good item at a good price.
It is plug and play, so set up couldn’t be easier, and using it there is no noticeable slowing down of anything. I transfer documents from my phone and tablet and even videos transfer just as quickly as they do when plugged directly into my PC.
The lead is very short, but for me this is not a problem. I liked it so much I bought another for my lap top and find the short lead better here as it can stay with the computer and I do not need to find another space to place it. On my PC, it just hangs down the back where I have my mouse, keyboard, speakers and so on permanently attached, leaving my front USBs free for things I add and remove like my phone.
For this price buying this is the obvious choice if you need extra USB ports.
The devices are powered, but they are not active.
I bought another brand that actually works.
It's the certainly best looking usb port I've seen, but I can't recommend it's build quality based on this experience. Disappointed.
This hub was also sold by Apple so we thought it would be ok and duly ordered via a third party seller on Amazon.
The unit arrived quickly but the first disappointment was that we were sent a unit witth a continental two pin mains plug with a UK adaptor added loose within the overall packaging. Annoying as the combined adaptor is quite large and we had some difficulty fitting it neatly on to a power source. I suspect the third party seller had sourced European as opposed to UK stock as a friend has this hub with a proper UK plug so I would recommend ordering from Amazon UK direct to hopefully get the right adaptor.
Second and minor issue, both USB and power cables are quite thick and black and stand out a mile beside the iMac and the predominantly white cables of other accessories. Very much a personal view though, this may not bother you.
Third issue and this was my fault for not reading the small print. It may be powered but is not guaranteed to power third party devices. Can't charge iPad for example (packaging says it can't charge iPads) and both our external hard drives stay depressingly silent with no sign of life.Joystick also won't work via the hub. Bang goes the hub's usefulness for us.
So sadly, whilst the actual hub looks great with a very Apple like aluminium finish, the power limitations for accessories and( in the case of our marketplace supplied hub ) the unnecessary and bulky use of a UK power adaptor with the supplied continental plug mean that I am struggling to recommend this compared to perhaps less aesthetically Apple like hubs.
The lack of power for devices was such an issue for us that we are now looking for a replacement.
It's early days yet but so far so good.
Delivery was above expectation - I ordered on Thursday 7th November, with Super Saver Delivery since I was in no desperate rush. The quoted delivery date was 13th - 15th November. It was actually despatched on 9th November and delivered by Royal Mail on 11th November.
The build quality seems good - it's reassuringly solid - and the aluminium case nicely matches my iMac. Contrary to some of the other reviews the cables (both power and USB) are not too short (IMHO) being 1.5 meters in length and allow perfect siting of the hub on my desk, although admittedly the surge block I use for power sits on the desktop and not on the floor. If you have to plug into a low-level wall socket or a floor socket then it may be more of a problem.
In regard the power supply I have simultaneously plugged in a memory stick, an iPhone 5, which charged quite happily, and a Maxtor Onetouch III Mini 120 GB external hard drive, which powered up and ran quite happily off a single port on the hub. This seems pretty reasonable to me, anything more and you should be looking for external power supply to the individual items.
