This is that rare thing, a genuinely scary contemporary (well, 1987)American horror thriller film. In essence, a psychologist (Martin Sheen) working for the NYPD, has had a terrible experience when his wife dies unexpectedly. Later, having moved house, he forms an embryonic relationship with a woman neighbour and, in time, his little boy gets to like her. At the same time, he is helping the real police to understand what is happening in some apparently voodoo-related murders of children.

I don't want to spoil the film, still less the twist at the end, by saying too much, but you can take it from me that this is a film worth watching: it has plot, suspense, good acting, good and well-photographed New York City and other locations and a great ending. Well worth seeing.

A bit dated now but good voodoo story. I did start laughing after a bit as we noticed every time Martin Sheen appears he shouting...but good eerie feel with some basis on a real cult/religion

Although a thriller, and a disturbing one at that, this is also a meditation on how people who are searching or in need of something outside of their regular lives, can be easily sucked into dangerous ideology. It can be terrorism, racism, or anarchism; here, it is a religious cult. Robert Loggia and Martin Sheen are a Police Lieuetenant and a Psychotherapist, respectively, who investigate when an NYPD detective goes off the rails after finding the body of an eight year old boy on a sacrificial altar. The deeper they go, the more personal it gets, until Sheen's own eight year old son, played by Harley Cross, is caught up in the affair.
