Watching this film was a very frustrating experience. It is a very effective horror film and the first "H" certificate film in the UK.The only problem is that the sound is so poor it is difficult to understand what is happening.
it is very annonying that dvd distributors think that they can get away with foisting unwatchable copies on the public. So regrettably I would have to recommend that you don't buy this film.

!!!Warning. This review is not for this particular release, just for the film in question. !!!

Otherwise known as 'The Dark Eyes Of London'(the British release title), this is one of only a couple of films Bela Lugosi made in the U.K. It is an adaptation of an Edgar Wallace story, and concerns the discovery of several bodies along the bank of the Thames. The police become interested when it comes to light that all men have taken out life insurance with a certain Doctor Orloff(played by Lugosi). Inspector Holt(Williams) is assigned to the case and begins to investigate Orloff, and his links with a home for the blind, for which he is a benefactor.
Low budget it may be, but this is a forgotten masterpiece, full of creepy little moments and atmosphere drips from the creaky sets. Lugosi gives a great performance, as does Greta Gynt, as the daughter of one of the murdered men, and Wilfred Walter as a hulking blind giant of a man is also excellent.
It is available on Region 2, as a public domain DVD from a company called Exposure Cinema. Buy it now, you won't be dissapointed.

I bought the same copy and looked forward to a good old yarn but gave up watching it firstly because the film looked dreadful, worse than most ive seen in public domain and secondly the sound was terrible. It is a pity really as lugosi looked pretty good in it and i would be tempted if i saw it in another copy/prodution by another company with decent feedback as to its condition.I do love the old movies and especially lugosi but was left disappointed purely by the advertised copy.

Great set in the heart of London. Bela Lugosi the mischiveous crook picking on the vulnerable as usual. Forgery of money, people going missing and put under his evil spell. Two decetectives one American, employed to see how British Police work. Human monster, his companion. Good suspence through.
