I'm a Francophile! It's a fact! I make no apology for this, and I read every book I can get my hands on about the people, the culture and the lifestyle I've grown to love while spending time in Paris and Provence. Gradually, I'm working my way through writing reviews here of my favorites, books that have enlightened me, entertained me and sometimes even seduced me (to drink Provençal rosés [Pedaling in Provence] or sleep naked [Being French!]), books that make me feel more French just by reading them. I couldn't wait to write about Being French! A Frenchman's Guide to a More Sensual Life. It's the best of the best, IMHO.
First of all, it shares the wisdom of a life well and sensually lived and a practical understanding of life and love that is quintessentially French. I think, at heart, many French men and women must be philosophers. François Roland is no exception. It's obvious that he has thought long and deeply about some of life's most profound experiences ... those centered on sensuality. From the logical progression chapter by chapter, building the book's major themes ... the importance of freeing oneself, of being honest and having integrity in sensual matters, of living one's life fully alive ... to the personal sensual stories, some of them rather spicy, to the film recommendations at the end that capture the ideas and ideals of the book (while also providing some inspiration), this book is a pleasure to read. It's funny and warm and so very French. I absolutely devoured it!
Being French! covers the full gamut of sensual topics, which I won't list here, since you can read the table of contents in the free Kindle sample. Suffice it to say that each chapter is well-written, that topics from marriage to cybersex, are covered with humor and imagination, and that I would be hard-pressed to come up with a sensual topic the author hasn't thoughtfully addressed. I'm a little surprised that the book is only available as a Kindle, but thankfully it doesn't have the usual messy edits that some other self-published books have. I hope a publisher picks this one up.
I have a few favorite authors in this genre ... French lifestyle ... most notably Harriet Welty Rochefort, Debra Ollivier, and, more recently, Pamela Druckerman, but among what makes Being French! unique is that it's one of the few that is by an actual French person and the only one I know by a French man. And since Frenchmen are notably (or notoriously) experts on romance and love and sex, I can't think of a more authentic way to explore these matters than by reading Being French!
He has not experienced any love in his life. He uses, and explains, all the nuances, strategies and smooth talk to seduce unsuspecting women to bed, probably (something he does not explain) making promises of an everlasting friendship. Once she has been conquered, he moves on, (excuse the pun) much like a male street dog on the lookout for a bitch on heat or then a female to seduce. He is in a loveless marriage (one can see the reason why), has no family life or children, (so it appears) and literally spends his time on-line or on the street trying to satisfy this animal urge in the ?hope that maybe the next sexual encounter will bring the happiness and contention that he is sorely missing. He has my sympathy, but I detest the belief he is trying to instill that only the French men knows about a sensual life. True sensuality only comes to the fore in true love, something he has never experienced. The word 'sensual' in his guide should be replaced with 'sexual'. He is a real 'Don Juan', and his behaviour, as avidly explained by himself, tells me more about his personality than he would probably want me to know. I do feel sorry for the woman who married him, as the full realization of his personality as just a 'Casanova' dawned on her. Why she does not leave him, remains a mystery.

" A city is a capricious lady; it takes time so that she lets herself be seduced and completely revealed" - Paulo Coelho (A quote from Paris and Other Loves Chapter)
I consider this book as a piece of fine art because it could answer to all my senses ; witty, sexy, smart, funny, charming and not to forget sensuel or sensual, plus its unique charm in using French language mixing with pure American or English idioms. Mmm, a very delicious book indeed.
Being French! A Frenchman's Guide to a More Sensual Life is composed of a journal of Monsieur Francois Roland. yes, this is a book with true stories of a very charming guy who share his experiences to his readers.
Let's face this fact: A good sensual life was never something easily available to everyone or that you take from shelves in some kind of self-service shop. Fighting for it, against all kinds of constraints and boundaries, was, and still is, the standard situation for probably most people'
Well, if you have ever wonder why someone has his or her way to charm the people with all their aspects, how could someone be so loved, what is that the actual thing that you are looking for in life, what made the French guys be so sexy and so stand out when it comes to the flirtation subject (alright not all of them but most of them) , is Paris really a sensual city? Well, this book will give you the answers to all the above wonders and if not.. bon, you would find it as a very lovely company... and especially, if you ever wonder what is exactly the true meaning of beauty.. this book would emphasis that "every woman" deserves the little glimpse of sensuality, to feel (and to know that they are) sexy and deserves to be cherished as a princess.
As for gentlemen, This book would give you the encouragement on how to reach out for the one that you may cherish for the rest of your life. Have you ever felt so regret when you didn't have enough guts to say hello to a stranger,... a perhaps.. special someone that you have only 1 minute to make a move because if not you would loose her for the rest of your life .... and yes, you would also have the access code to woman's soul.
To the writer (if he has a chance to see this) I wish to see more of your work. I love your style of writing so much!
Therefore, may I add a personal little note to the “one star” comment?
I personal believe that the meaning of sensual is the art that could touch your or your special someone senses. It is not the art of how to lure someone into bed. If you take sometimes and read this book "without being prejudice" you would find that this book is not talking about 'that'. It is not a Kamasutra written by French .. This is a book that would tell you how to reach women soul.
Well, would not it be good if you could increase the charm to your love one. Not everyone is born with that, I felt grateful that someone has already summed this up for me. If I were a husband to someone, I know that after I’ve finished reading this book, I’d know how to please my wife even more...
And isn't that what any good guys want, to make their wife feel as the most special lady of his life and to be the happiest lady on this earth planet. Well, if I were a man that would be definitely what I’d want.
