Product Description

The original motion picture soundtrack of Being Flynn, with evocative music written by Badly Drawn Boy especially for the movie starring Robert de Niro, Julianne Moore and Paul Dano. The director of Being Flynn, Paul Weitz, also directed the smash hit Little Fockers and co-directed with his brother American Pie and About a Boy – the latter also featuring highly praised music by Badly Drawn Boy.
Being Flynn is based on a true story, a book by Nick Flynn about his relationship to his father, the self-styled “great writer” Jonathan Flynn. Nick, himself a budding writer, in search of his own identity, suffers from the loss of his mother and the absence of his father, whom he has not seen for 18 years. While working in a shelter for the homeless, Nick again encounters his formidable father, a down-and-out with an alcohol problem whose failures in life have not shaken his self-belief. Nick is a superb role for one of America’s finest up-and-coming actors, Paul Dano, while the father is magnificently played by De Niro, whose mature talent is perfectly suited to this character. A further outstanding performer, Julianne Moore, takes the role of Nick Flynn’s mother.
To heighten the emotional turmoil of the story, Paul Weitz turned to his old collaborator Damon Gough (stage name Badly Drawn Boy), following the major success in 2002 of About a Boy. Gough scored this film alone, and released three songs from the resulting album as singles. Weitz had followed his career as Badly Drawn Boy: “I had listened to his intervening albums – his most recent one, repeatedly … In some ways, his music is darker now”. This artistic development fitted the task of composing for a film that proclaims The ambiguity and wry humour of Badly Drawn Boy’s indie-rock music could not be bettered in a story about personal identity and relationships to parents, as is evident, for example, in the flashbacks to Nick's life growing up with his mother.
The 15 tracks include a number of instrumental scores, but the soundtrack kicks off with the ballad-like "I'll Keep the Things You Throw Away" to a violin accompaniment which provides a romantic touch and shows that the emphasis on guitars of Badly Drawn Boy’s previous album, Have You Fed the Fish?, is here balanced by a welcome variety of instrumentation. The funky number entitled "The Smile Behind Your Face" has a warm element from the horns, while “Harbor Street” is coloured by a strong saxophone section.

Having followed BDB's music since almost the beginning, his latest creation plays on all that is gone before. The simple yet complex musical arrangements are a joy. He is really at the top of his craft.... I can't recommend it enough for BDB followers and those wishing to sit, relax and be taken on journey.
