I already own a lot of keyboards, I use a Novation X-Station 49 as my controller keyboard, but I was wanting a cheap 2 octave keyboard that could be connected to my ESX-1 so I could play the keyboard samples on the ESX-1 live in a live environment. I also wanted something that would stand out on stage colour wise. So, the UMX250 caught my attention.

Bear in mind that this review isn't going to cover connecting the keyboard to your PC/Mac nor the
audio interface that is provided. I don't have a need to do that and I'm not curious enough to spend time doing that.

At £82, minus the PSU (I bought one for £8), you know that you're going to be compromising a lot when compared to other 2 octave controllers, personally if I was after a 2 octave master keyboard I would be looking at a feature rich Novation Impulse for over twice the price.

So, what do you get for your money? One keyboard, one audio interface, a keyboard to USB cable, an audio cable, a driver CD with 250 VSTs (softsynths, effects, etc) and a plethora of useless paperwork.

I have to admit that it's a pet peeve of mine when a company can provide a large, glossy, product
catalog but can't be bothered to provide a physical copy of the devices manual (all 15 pages). Instead this is on the driver CD for you to print out yourself it you want to.

Out of the box the UMX is quite a chunky 2 octave keyboard and the red is a really fantastic in your face colour. I'd read some reviews that stated that the red top cover was metal. This is not the case (pun not intended), it's actually quite thin plastic and if dropped I'd be amazed if it didn't break or crack. Regarding the build quality mine came with something rattling around inside it.

I gave this keyboard 5 stars because it delivers in all the areas I wanted it to.

Its feels solidly built. The knobs and faders feel very good and this is an area where other keyboards I've tried that cost the same or more fail.

It plays good, the keys feel just right, another hard thing to find.

The Audio interface it ships with does a good job, though I will likely upgrade to a different in the future to get 96Khz capability. This is not essential at all, but I would like the ability to experiment.

For the price I got it for (about (£) or so) it delivers. Infact at its price I figured it was simply the best value for money deal going. Its a lot nicer looking that any other keyboard I've seen in person at this price, it has a metal casing, which is thin and light but solid. I've bumped this a few times and it has not dented.

I would have liked more knobs instead of the buttons, but they may well come into their own as I acquire different software.

It looks really good as well. Which is important! You should feel good about the equipment you save up and buy.

Overall I am very happy with this purchase.

Not a bad little keyboard, best used as a MIDI input, although the interfaces and velocity changes are a little sketchy and requires a lot of setting changes in the computer software. Not bad, not great either.
