While I would like to believe that the disgusting behaviour of Grace's husband is an extreme version of such situations, I appreciated that Paris chose to focus on psychological abuse rather than physical as this is a torture often overlooked in society.
Grace is essentially her husband's prisoner and he is a vile, sadistic and evil man. Paris' writing is so effective at times, I felt nauseous over his character's actions. Grace's sister Millie has downs syndrome and Jack (the antagonist) makes no secret of the fact that he intends to abuse her physically as well as mentally and emotionally. My cousin has downs syndrome so this but a particular nerve with me. This character is just evil.
I found myself unable to stop myself from reading on, even as the clock approached 3am on a work night! Truly gripping! While you know how the story is going to turn out, you find yourself rooting for Grace so much, in despair at her horrific situation, that you must be with her every step of the way.
An enjoyable read!
Grace is a really strong character. She tries to fight and find ways out of her situation, however Jack is a master manipulator, and he continually ups his psychological games. Her sister, Millie is equally as strong, and because of her condition, people underestimate her capabilities and understanding. I loved Millie and wanted to wrap her in a hug every time. I could picture her so easily, B. A. Paris did an excellent job of writing her character.
This is a seriously twisted storyline and I absolutely loved it.
B. A. Paris is a new author for me, and I will definitely be reading more of her books in the future.
As for the end, looking back, I can say it is quite unbelievable. Surely the police would have noticed certain oddities (don't want to give the plot away) of the house and the strange circumstances of the death?
It was a great idea for a story but poor research, characterisation and plotting means it does not live up to its expectations.
