Product description

Product Description

Courtney Pine is one of the most influential figures in modern British jazz: an innovative saxophonist, flautist, sessioneer, broadcaster, bandleader and collaborator. This 18-track collection is an excellent introduction to the works of the man, encompassing tracks from Journey to the Urge Within to Another Story and spanning the years 1986-1998. Throughout, you will hear the different styles and flavas sampled by Pine; from old school reggae to free form jazz, sweet lovers rock stylings to two-step rhythms; it is all here.

The popular acclaim accorded to his debut album Journeys to the Urge Within in 1986 alerted the media to the fact that Pine was a part of a burgeoning jazz underground, along with artists such as Andy Sheppard and Loose Tubes. The media was looking for a new face for British jazz, and for a while Journeys was the coffee-table album to own. It became the first British contemporary jazz album to achieve a placing in the UK Top 40. Included on this collection are "Miss Interpret", "Children Of The Ghetto" and "Peace" from this album. 1988's follow up, Destiny's Song, continued the excellent work of his debut, establishing Pine in America, and repeating its predecessor's top 40 placing in the UK.

His March 1990 album, Closer To Home was a collection of reggae tunes that took Pine back to his musical roots. The album was recorded in Jamaica with contemporary reggae producer Gussie Clarke. It was later remixed by Pine for release in America, reaching No. 14 in the Billboard chart in 1992. Included here are "Get Busy", "Blue Tide" and "In Time (All Will Know)" from this album.

Pine has worked with those very much at the forefront of leftfield jazz 'n' breaks, sweet soul and lover's rock, artists of the calibre of Roni Size, Cassandra Wilson, Mica Paris and Carrol Thompson.

Good intro to saxophone jazz. (I don't count myself as a fan of jazz) Bought it after seeing him in concert - amazing! Some cracking tracks. Well worth a listen.

To really get Courtney Pine he has to be seen live but this great CD traces his development from a being young pioneer to being an older pioneer. He's getting better with age and experience and deserves a much wider audience than he has.
