Product Description

Review

'This is a very good book indeed, both timely and necessary…. Bennett writes with humour, style, understanding, a massive amount of common sense and not a little wisdom. And how often do you use those words in an educational context?' --Times Educational Supplement

'a jargon-free, unpatronising, highly browsable and accessible set of responses and suggested solutions to common classroom management issues…if you want an instant answer without having to wade through pages of search results, other people's mis'spelled comments on the forum, or just a reminder that you are not alone in the big bad world of behaviour, you would do well to turn to this book which seems, like Mr Bennett himself (and perhaps that really annoying kid who sits near the back in 9X4), to have an answer for everything... a book that no self-respecting staff room or faculty office should be without… our Behaviour Guru hovers, like a guardian angel, ready to gently reassure, redirect and reintroduce classroom Zen.' --Jenny Turner, Journal of Trainee Teacher Educational Research, UK

Tom Bennett's book is a selection of the questions from TES he has answered in section format. Generally he offers very samey advice throughout and personally I feel for those that seek reassurance about escalation and following procedure this is a good book, but for an insight into behaviour management I recommend Bill Rogers of Gererd Dixie

I've really enjoyed reading The BG. It is funny and entertaining but also intelligent and it presents a lot of useful hints about behaviour managemant in the classroom. It doesn't happen very often that you come across a book that gives you solutions to your problems and makes you laugh at the same time. Highly recommend it!

Overall this book is good and I am glad I bought it and I will probably refer to it again when in need. I particularly liked the tips at the end for maintaining sanity, however I did at times find Tom Bennett's writing style a little overly angry and aggressive and I felt a little like I was being shouted at...

Bennett's style is super-readable and the content edifying. While the answers to the letters (for that is what the book comprises) start to get repetitive towards the end, this is simply because the author has a clear and consistent line to behaviour management: lay down the rules and apply them consistently.

I follow Tom on Twitter and he is relatively informative and insightful- it's a shame this book isn't.
If you're a new teacher, I can see this being quite useful. However as a teacher hitting the 5 year mark, I found the advice useless and quite often blasé. No depth, no theory and only experience backing up the comments and no real life examples of where he'd experienced something similar. The tone of the book is also too friendly as opposed to being informative and isn't supportive of teachers in the classroom unless slt is mentioned. Some questions he also answered with a joke as he believed they weren't genuine questions. There are very few actionable solutions in this book to support teachers in managing their classroom.

Will not be a helpful read to anyone that isn't an NQT or trainee, and even then there are much better books on behaviour to read or recommend to those colleagues.

This book should be compulsory reading for every teacher. It is packed with solutions (some simple, some innovative, all brilliant) to every imaginable classroom issue and manages to be highly entertaining with it. Read it in a weekend and see how much more confident you are walking into school on Monday morning. Then put it on the shelf with your reference books because you will go back to it time and time again. More please!

Having read everything possible, and (privately) sought out every behaviour management course possible, over 8 years, this book did what others did not. The emphasis these days seems to be that poor behaviour is solely blamed on the teacher. I am sick of being told to accept all the excuses for poor behaviour - society doesn't. Our students have to have the tools to be able communicate with others or face a lifetime of exclusion. Reasons, yes. Support, yes. Understanding, of course. Expectations still need to met. Students need to be prepared for that society. This book empowers and inspires and gives hope to professionals who cannot pull any more rabbits out of the hat, before giving up and seeking positions away from the battleground of the modern classroom. I was heartened that I was not the only one who believed in high expectations. We cannot deal with BM as solo practitioners, but as a team, never giving up. There is hope in improving chances of a decent education for our students. Thank you Tom.

First of all I really like the cover of the book, it's bright and has a playful element to it. The book mostly consists of Q&As so I think it is better suited if you just want to flick through a page and absorb some advice. The central piece of advice I think that flows throughout the book is that actions speak louder than words so you have to be consistent in your behaviour management.
