In telling this story song by song, Steve Lambley avoids the main pitfall that writers about the Beatles are prone to - of getting bogged down in details that won't necessarily engage every reader (fans or otherwise). The story of the Beatles would be nothing without the songs: and in celebrating each song in turn, Steve Lambley manages to shed light on the Beatles' individual lives and personalities, their musicianship and songwriting techniques, and their development in the widest sense - as well as on the social, historical and cultural context of their times. And if you've got a guitar (or maybe a keyboard or other musical instrument), I guarantee that you'll soon be using the book's carefully selected musical excerpts to pick out your favourite tunes. A delight.
If you can read music, you will appreciate the analysis, complete with scores. If not, there's still all the rest waiting for you. You will be led all along the process in which the deep creative force characteristic of Beatles was unleashed. You will be able to follow the development of the songs from their genesis until the circumstances of the actual recording. All combined with valuable insights on the life of our favourite musicians.
To summarize, a very enjoyable book !
