First of all this is not for those new to Bolan as it features songs when he was still in his teens and many years before the Glam of Get it On and 20th Century Boy. So it is really only for Bolan fans or those that want to find out what he sounded like in the very early days in a time when musicians had to progress up the ladder of their craft rather then being plucked out of TV show auditions. This represents his earliest recordings most have been available before and even the album has as well. The diffrence is that this album has tracked down all the diffrent versions and other items from the same period and put them together in a well presented package, with booklet and notes. An example of how to re-release an old album and give new life. All the songs are written by Bolan which shows the talent he had.

This album some may not know has been re-released this year under the name 'HARD ON LOVE' also it is really 'Scare me to death' album without the Simon Napier-Bell's electric updated touch. It is Marc early in his career yet showing what was to come. You only have to compare Mustang Ford on this album then on 'Scare...' to know what I mean.
For the cost of this CD you get a very good selection of songs showing Marc's range & talent. I highly recomend this Cd to fans of Marc & try & get 'Scare...' to compare. I think you find these songs so good you be singing them long after you've turned CD off as they stick in your mind.
Buy & enjoy

In the pantheon of rock ‘n’ roll Marc Bolan was utterly unique.
Nobody else sounded like him or wrote songs like him, and this collection of 37 early demo tracks demonstrates how Marc set out to achieve his goal of super stardom.
I had a copy of the original 20 track vinyl album released in 1974. Even then it was a fascinating album. The cover featured just a couple of photos and a track listing; there was no other information. What was it? A solo album or something else? In those pre-internet days it was almost impossible to find any info on your favourite performers unless it was in the weekly music papers, and by ’74 the press was swiftly loosing interest in all things Bolan. It was really not until 1981 and the release of ‘You Scare Me To Death’, an album which featured twelve of the demos, pumped up to a full band sound by Marc’s former manager Simon Napier-Bell, that some real info finally came to light.
The story of ‘The Beginning Of Doves’ is as fascinating as the music it contains and goes something like this. In 1966 Marc Bolan was a struggling unknown. With two flop singles to his name he decided it was time for a new manager. He contacted Simon Napier-Bell who was then looking after one of Marc’s favourite bands the Yardbirds. Bolan turned up at Napier-Bell’s home and played him some songs. The manager was fascinated by them and by Marc’s extraordinary voice. He booked the aspiring musician into a studio to cut 14 songs. Marc thought he was making an album, but instead two tracks, ‘Hippy Gumbo’ and ‘Misfit’ were chosen to become a third solo single. That flopped, but did attract the attention of John Peel who became Marc’s loyalist supporter over the next few years.

Marc Bolan was a rock n roll icon in his head long before the music universe rewarded him with the status. This CD in part pre-dates his T.Rex and Tyrannosaurus Rex days, and consists mainly from demos and outtakes from the 60's. Fir most musicians who later had worldwide fame such a collection would be an embarrassment. Not so in this case. Some of the songs have already got the T.Rex groove from the teenage Marc Bolan. The world wasn't ready for him yet!
This collection was mostly recorded by Simon Napier Bell (later he took-on George Michael) who reckons these are some of the best songs Bolan ever wrote. Lyrically they are saturated with the Bolan charm and unique delivery. The vice is at time very warbly, but if you dig unusual voices this will be a type of heaven for you!
This collection has so much unreleased material, and this is how a re-issue should be done. It's informative, something for the diehards, and for the new arrivals on Planet Bolan this is pretty close to where it all began. The sound quality is superb, the remastering is top notch.

After far too many years without a turntable to play my original vinyl copy, it was great to hear this album again. It isn't the original album cover, but I knew that when I ordered it and it doesn't matter all that much. What might matter to some people, though, is that there are four tracks missing from the original - Sarah Crazy Child, Hot Rod Momma, Misty Mist and Cat Black. I can live with that, but more important is the sound problem in the last second or so of Jasper C Debussy (it suddenly plays too fast, which is hardly ideal). If I'd paid more for it I'd probably send it back, but as it is, I'm happy with all the other tracks and really can't be bothered with the hassle of returning it.

Overall I've pretty much got what I paid for.

I bought this when it was eventually issued (Bolan had launched legal action to prevent it being released in '72) in summer 1974 when his career was in free-fall in the UK and he had moved to the US. As, at heart, a Tyrannosaurus Rex fan, I far preferred this, at that time, to the T Rex boogie machine which was starting to splutter. The Beginning of Doves is a collection of demos and early singles recorded with Simon Napier-Bell in 1966 before he placed him into proto-punk-glam group John's Children the following year after several failed singles. Other tracks come from the very early Tyrannosaurus Rex after Marc had left John Children and was hustling his way into the London underground. What is startling, given the fantastic quality of many of these songs, is that Bolan used only five of them on his first two Tony Visconti produced albums with One Inch Rock becoming his second single. What the listener gets with this album is many of Bolan's first songs when he was only aged 17 or 18, which Simon Napier Bell believes are the best he ever wrote. He has a point. Tracks including Jasmine 49, I'm Weird, You Got The Power, Misfit, Pictures of Purple People, Jasper C Debussy and Observations have the seeds of genius and are as good as anything he did later. It is just, as one would expect, some off the performances are a bit hesitant and the production is often basic and rough and ready. However, if this does not bother you, Bolan's actual performances are really fantastic and pretty essential for anyone who loves his music and is interested in where it came from. The beginnings of genius no less.
