This book is amazing!!! I really couldn't get my head around aperture, ISO, depth of field etc etc, all seemed to complicated!!!! But this book is so easy to understand and it is just like being in a lesson! Bite size chunks of info and easy to understand . Absolutely no negatives for me about this book! Well done to the author!

Dorling Kindersley has earned a justifiably good reputation for producing excellent books, and this is no exception.

The text is well-written, breaking down possibly daunting topics into simple, easy-to-follow steps. Even better, there are lots of photographs to illustrate the topics under discussion. After all, photography is a visual art; much better to have pictures which show "if you do X then the result is Y" rather than relying on dry and impenetrable words.

The book is written with Canon and Nikon users in mind (the largest market segment), but the instructions are easily adaptable to other makes of camera.

I would unhesitatingly recommend this book to anyone looking to get into photography.

As a newbie moving from the auto setting on a compact camera to a bridge camera with full manual control, I needed to know what everything did. I looked at several books including the Dummies series and in fact bought a couple, but this was by far the best.

It is laid out in a simple format and explains apperture settings, shutter settings, scene modes and manual control. It explains how to frame a shot so the focus changes for effect or so that water droplets reflect light or are captured as they splash. It gives you some great ideas. As a complete newbie, a couple of my sample pictures taken within the first week of getting the book are show below - I'd always wanted to take pictures with a blurred background and now I know how!!

I hope you found my review helpful as I enjoy writing them. If you didn't, leave a comment explaining how it could be improved. Thanks.

A very intuitive guide for amateur photographers who wish to expand their knowledge and obtain a basic theoretical background in photography. I really enjoyed reading it and i believe it helped me not only take better pictures but also enjoy the process much more. Highly recommended book, probably the best of 4 similar books that I purchased together.

A great book for beginners who know nothing about cameras. I now understand the difference between SLR and bridge cameras and some of the basics for taking good pictures.

I bought this book (I can admit it) because I didnt really know what I was doing including what camera to buy. This book and youtube have become my personal idiots guide to photography. I have always liked taking photos but have always edited them with photoshop rather than gaining the adequate data. This book was helpful from start to end. It explains the details needed to understanding photography.
It starts with the different types of cameras and the differences. It tells you how to hold a camera which may seem easy but now makes more sense. It explains about lenses, filters lighting etc. I would recommend before you do anything that you buy this book.

I bought this for my 9yr old grandson who is very interested in photography . The balance of illustrations, photos and words was ideal for a younger good reader. He now is very knowledgeable and asks some very challenging questions so I think I need to read a more advanced book so that I can answer them!

I purchases this item from a different seller as I needed it quickly.

But I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I own a Nikon DSLR and an extra telephoto lens. For me this book is worth every penny, I sort of knew what I was doing, but still wasn't using my camera to its full potential and I felt I was cheating as I kept using it an 'auto' mode. This book explains everything in a clear and simple way. Good for complete beginners and having a refresher. It uses images to explain what each setting type will do to the image outcome.

It's also a handy size, this actually fits in my camera bag nicely (I have a large messenger size bag) and is such a good reference point.
