I first bought modern music theory for guitarists and it was so straight forward and readable, I really like this beginners book, its refreshing to see a different approach to teaching the 'right way'

I have just read through this book and listened to the associated free music files (separate download to computers) and was very impressed. I found the explanation and the examples extremely well explained and easy to follow and the audio file quality is to a high standard. If you are starting off on the path of learning guitar then you will find this book to be a great benefit.
I have had a number of books now by Joseph Alexander and they have all been to an exceptional standard, and to me, they are great learning tools.

I have read and continue to re read many of Joseph's books and use the exercises daily. This one is great because it really makes sense of the basics of rhythms and strum patterns and helps improve basic understanding before trying to progress. A good and easy read.

So far I have tried a variety of methods for learning and 3 months in this book was just the boost I needed to add to online tools like Yousician. Clearly articulated and easy to understand it's really halped and given me a bunch of exercises to nail those harder elements.

I bought this book along with How to play Guitar ( A complete guide for absolute beginners) by Ben Parker, as I simply didn't have any idea as to what kind of book would suit me as a complete beginner. Both books turned out to be very helpful for me to get to understand the very basic of guitar playing. But How to play Guitar by Ben Parker was easier to understand when it came to chord learning from scratch. I was classically trained in piano, so at least I didn't have to worry about reading musical notes. I just needed to understand how to produce a right note/chords using these 6 strings on fret board and Ben Parker's book has provided a photo of the fret board with a finger pressing on the right string coupled with some easy exercise score to practice. The illustration was easy to understand and clear. With Beginner's Guitar lessons by Joseph Alexander, the content has more detailed explanation such as how to hold a guitar and use a plectrum in the correct way, which Ben Parker's book did not elaborate much in great details. Once I got through the most of the pages in Ben Parker's book, it was a lot easier for me to go through the lessons in this book by Joseph Alexander and got more knowledge out of the book, as it has lot more convoluted information such as splitting the chord and descending bass lines. At the end page of both books, there are dictionary of useful chords. I find the book by Ben Parker better and easier to get into, which has a comprehensive list of chords by type ( Major, Minor and 7th chords). Once you have learned the most common chords through the books, you can always refer back to this list of chords to check your progress in remembering them and build more knowledge from there.Read more ›

Although technically not a beginner. I got this to refresh the basics as I started again playing more regularly. This is a good book that describes the basics well. I must admit I would like it more extensive. Maybe the author would consider writing something 4 times this size going through everything a beginner should know. I have bought another 10 or so books in the series, I now have to find the time to go through these.

Really like this book. Very easy to follow for a beginner. I bought a similar beginners book alongside this one, which I haven't really used, as this book covers most things you need to know and gives you a good foundation of knowledge to build on.
