This is a surprising, intriguing and powerful first novel. It opens with Eli, crackling with vitality, with life, her voice ringing out clear and true. Immediately I was with her, and she is a fascinating companion whose journey I wanted to share every step of the way. She is warm, direct, resilient, strong - until a chance meeting with a stranger throws her into the grip of a relentless obsession. Slowly, painfully, we begin to understand the weight of Eli's past and the loss that colours each and every day. The language is sensuous, the observations original and the evocation of Eli’s daily life in rural America is rich and compelling. I loved it.

Unputdownable! A random choice from the new e-books and I’ve just put it down - read in two days - unheard of for me! From the first page I was completely immersed in the life of Eli. Her voice takes over your heart as she takes you through her troubled childhood. My own daughter is now in her twenties and I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like to have been forced to give up her baby. Yet through this book I could imagine it. The author took me completely into Eli’s world. I was desperate to find out if she would get reunited with her and, if so, what that would be like. The story has sad times but is wonderfully uplifting. A touching tribute to love in all its many forms.

I finished this book last night and I already know it is going to be one of those books that stays with you, haunting you, for a long time.

When I first picked it up it took me a little while to get used to the main character, but I soon realised that this was entirely down to the fact that I have not lately branched out to read anything told from a slightly different perspective to my own – the main character, Eli, is a woman from a very different time and place, and way of thinking, to my own. But nevertheless, within only a few pages she had completely captured my heart, and I became as drawn into her story and involved with her emotions as if I were standing right beside her, or in fact experiencing everything from inside her own head. Eli is not your ‘usual’ heroine from a women’s novel. At the time the novel starts she is middle aged, living a day-to-day domestic routine with her husband Tommy in the town they both grew up in, and her life could be described from the outside as unremarkable. She does not immediately come across as the strong, feisty heroine that is popular in women’s fiction these days. But, as Eli’s story unfolded, I soon realised the immense strength she does in fact have just to move forward in her daily life, continue pouring all her energy and love into her marriage, and never give up hope about finding her daughter. This itself taught me a lesson about what we see as a ‘typical’ female hero, and the many different forms that human strength can take.

Em Muslin describes human emotion perfectly through her depiction of Eli and her husband Tommy. Eli’s searing, agonising loss of the daughter that was taken away from her shortly after birth, when Eli was only fourteen, is perfectly pitched. It is heartbreaking without being romanticised.

One of the most beautifully written books I have read. The book captures you instantly with the relationship turmoils of a family and the instant love you feel for Elli.
A must read as it naturally entwines you within the complex life of many characters of which in turn you can't put the book down.
Can't wait for another book from this most talented Author.
Thank you for a wonderful reading experience.

From the second chapter I was 'gripped' by this book. It is a brilliant read. Set in rural America it feels like you are going further back in time than you actually are. The author has a very clever way of slowly 'rolling back' the story to reveal the truth of Eli's life story. There are some interesting and quite sad characters and relationships in the book not least between Trudy and Daisy at the exclusion of Eli. The book is excellently written and takes you on a roller coaster of emotions from horror, sadness and cringing dread to relief and happiness. I would thoroughly recommend it! My book barometer is whether I am left with a feeling of loss at the end of a book. This definitely ticked that box and left me wanting more!

From the moment you start reading you are in Eli's world. This gifted writer paints such a vivid scene, you are in it, you can smell it. She draws you into Eli's mind so you are part of her - you feel her thoughts, hear her breathing. When I finished the book I didn't want to leave her.

I cannot imagine anyone not being deeply touched by this book, I absolutely loved it and can't wait to read more from this writer.

A beautifully evocative story that draws you right into the characters' lives and thoughts. A book about love, loss and pain in many different forms by an author with a huge understanding of human emotions. I found it impossible to to put down and completely disagree with the reviewer who complained about the pace of the book which I thought was perfectly timed to match the unfolding and unraveling of their long-held in emotions.
