Have you ever had that feeling where something awful happens in your life and you totally blame yourself for it? That is the theme of Before You Break. Guilt, whether deserved or not can shape and ruin a life.

Quinn/Daniel is broken and troubled. I wanted to hug him. To make him feel better. To listen to him. To offer him comfort and reassurance.

Ella is a listener, a nurturer, a giver. Everything I think Christina Lee seems to be. I feel that she totally immerses herself in her characters. She genuinely loves them and is rooting for them. Author - reader synchronised, both with the same aim makes a great book. That is something I love about Christina's books.

Some of the characters you should already know, the ones you don't know you will want to know. I heart Bennett. I heart Avery. I heart Rachel.

My favourite bits:

"One man's pebble in the road of life was another man's boulder."

"I'm not going to kiss you, Ella. Not tonight." She sagged against me, her forehead landing on my shoulder. "Kissing you would be too easy." I whispered in her ear. "And you're not a girl I want to be easy with."

"Guilt and regret are powerful things. But they can destroy your life. Somehow you have to learn to forgive yourself so you can move on."

"The pain never truly goes away, so you have to ...file it away. And then get busy living your life."

"Our kiss turned frantic, impassioned, reckless. It was bursting at the seams with unspoken words. I told her everything through that kiss. Every single f@(<|^€ thing. I begged her to forgive me."

"As solid as my bones. As liquid as my veins. To the very depths of my core. And maybe even my soul."

Written with style, written with love, written with understanding. I floved it.

I loved 'All of You', the first book in this series and Christina Lee's debut, so had no hesitation in reading this. And 'Before You Break' doesn't disappoint as once again she has brought us a couple to love in Quinn and Ella and a beautiful story to accompany them.

I loved Bennett, but Quinn was something else. I instantly became attached to him and Ella and was completely invested in their journey from the start. These two are kindred spirits; both have faced terrible, realistic heartache and loss and whilst Quinn is struggling, Ella has processed her grief.

Told from both perspectives, Quinn's was particularly tough on the emotions and my heart absolutely went out to him. Ella has a strength, determination and selflessness that is humbling and their attraction and want for each other is undeniable. But it is always simmering in the background that Ella is also unwittingly supporting Quinn in her professional capacity.

It's romantic, passionate, heartwarming and touching and I couldn't put it down (it's now 1.30am). If you are a fan of NA reads and the first book (although this could be read as a standalone), you won't be at all disappointed.

3.75 stars--BEFORE YOU BREAK is the second installment in the contemporary, new adult Between Breaths romance series. This is TSU’s star baseball catcher Daniel Quinn and Gabriella ‘Ella’ Abrams’s storyline. BEFORE YOU BREAK can be read as a stand alone although some of the previous storyline character play a small secondary role.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Quinn and Ella) the storyline follows psychology student Ella Abrams as she struggles with a less than attentive and unfaithful boyfriend, and working the suicide hotline at night. But a call from a young man, whose guilt over the death of his best friend, puts everything into perspective as Ella fights the guilt of her own loss.

Quinn is a star catcher for the TSU baseball team and a man who struggles with loneliness and loss. Coming from a political family, Quinn has spent more time alone than with his family but will find a closeness with Ella he had never known. But Quinn hides a dark past, one that haunts his days and nights, and one that will set himself on a path directly towards the woman with whom he is falling in love.

The supporting and secondary characters include Ella’s friends (Rachel and Avery) as well as some of Quinn’s teammates and fraternity brothers. While Quinn’s parents appear cold and disinterested, their lives have been groomed for power and control. Ella’s family is a close knit group who have suffered loss but continue to find support through one another’s love.

The relationship between Ella and Quinn begins as friends but soon builds into something more when Ella’s strained relationship with her current boyfriend ends in a forgettable drunken goodbye. Quinn and Ella’s attraction to one another is immediate although forbidden.

Suicide-hotline worker feels a kinship with fellow college-student Hero who called the hotline anonymously due to having suicidal thoughts. They unknowingly have the same circle of friends since Hero is her boyfriend’s frat brother. Hero and heroine personally connect one night and their relationship progresses quickly. But heroine still has a boyfriend and Hero secrets that prevent him from being in a committed relationship. How do they maneuver past their romance barriers? How do they react when they find out that Hero is the suicide caller & heroine the hotline help?

A good read. The suicide theme didn’t detract from the main romance. It was a point of similarity between Hero and heroine but it wasn’t the center of their romance. Hero and heroine had a strong mutual physical attraction. But it was their unexplainable connection that quickly drew them together. It shook them out of their current state of living: Hero with his self-blame & guilt and heroine with her dissatisfying relationship with her neglectful boyfriend. It made them consider taking risks while finding safety with each other. Their romance grew & the question of infidelity came up.** There are steamy scenes but, with Hero limiting their intimacy, their emotional connection was allowed to more fully develop. It went hand in hand with their character growth. Hero and heroine end up being better people at the end of the book.

Recommended.
