It has been 21 years since DG Archiv first released Gardiner's Beethoven symphony cycle. Though many conductors have since recorded Beethoven cycles or individual symphonies, this cycle still holds up well over time. Compared to the other "historically sensitive" Beethoven recordings that had been made by this time, Gardiner's is more robust and bracing. I'm not rubbishing Hogwood, Norrington and the Nimbus recordings of the Hannover Band. It is right that we revere Norrington's EMI recordings for their "first past the post" accolades. I am aware that only Hogwood's orchestra had been established and mature by the time they made their L'Oiseau Lyre cycle. These other cycles had their moments, but tended to be uneven. However, all the performances in the Gardiner cycle are excellent and he and his team still pack a punch.

I know that historically-informed anything means hurry-up speeds and artists who are out to drive the world to burnoud. I know that there is mounting evidence to refute the stratospheric speeds adopted by the HIP ensembles. Yet I have wearied of the stodge in the old-school Beethoven cycles done by the old conductors of the German school. I note that Gardiner and his orchestra are perhaps the most robust of the four pioneering British HIP cycles (Norrington, Hogwood and Hanover Band being the others). I know that the European HIP cycles (Bruggen, Krivine, Immerseel) are more focused in producing a beautiful sound. However, Gardiner's cycle is strong in its characterisation. As a robust cycle, I like to think it can take its place comfortably alongside the regular modern instrument recordings.

I know that the middle period symphonies have had many memorable readings in the past.

Excellent recording of two of the most popular of Beethoven's symphonies. Thoroughly recommended.
