This is my favourite music so I have several versions of it: Brendel, Perl, whatever Pletnev has recorded and some of the older greats, about 60 CDs in total !!!
When I want the gentlest, most soothing, most ethereal versions I go for Gilels every time. He seems to me to have a mastery of the spiritual that nobody else can quite capture, through Pletnev comes close.
Brendel is perfect of course, perfectly musically perfect and with a lot of expression. Perl, the young South American, has a unique phrasing reminiscent of the way Harnoncourt attacks the symphonies - so he makes you think again about these sonatas.
But Gilels, ah, mastery incarnate. A man so good he doesn't have to try. Like very fine wine after you have spent your life drinking plonk.

I already have the sets of the Beethoven Piano Sonatas played by Brendel, Schnabel, Lortie and Barenboim so Gilels had a lot to compete with. For me he passed the test with flying colours. His technique is legendary and he demonstrates his exceptional mastery of the piano throughout. It is probable that no pianist plays all of this wonderful music to everyone's satisfaction but the Gilels recordings will have a place among the most played of my versions. It is really sad that he was unable to complete the set - I would have loved to hear him play the Number 1. Only Brendel's version has got close to my ideal, but I feel sure Gilels would have come close as well. Ah well, let us be thankful that he recorded as many as he did - what a joy to listen to them!.

Glorious piano playing from Gilels. A couple of the sonatas are missing due to Gilels untimely death, but nevertheless a superb collection. Excellent essays included. Perhaps my favourite Beethoven pianist.

There are some recordings, very few in number, that seem completely "right". Gilels' Beethoven for me falls very definitely into that category. While his performances do not in any way lack character, he has that rare ability to make you feel as though the music cannot be played any other way. Moreover, despite his colossal virtuosity, he puts his gifts entirely at the service of the composer rather than indulging in personal idiosyncracy. The result are performances of this great music that stand the test of repeated audition and which grow in stature the better one gets to know them. The "Hammerklavier" is an awesome performance, as good as anything you are ever likely to hear. His "Waldstein" has tremendous control and tension, his "Les Adieux" has grace as well as poetry. His "Appassionata" is the finest performance I have ever heard, from any pianist, with the playing transcending superlatives: the highly-charged coda to the final movement is fearsome in its momentum and yet seems totally right in the context of what has gone before. Some of the "lesser" works are accorded performances that bring their own greatness of utterance into high relief in a way that other pianists fail to achieve. No matter that Gilels died without quite completing this set - what he did commit to disc is truly treasurable. The recordings themselves vary somewhat in quality: most are very good indeed, though some are a little close-up for comfort. Certainly this set would be one of my "desert island" selections.
