Product description

Product Description

In choosing her program, both for performances and for this recording, Leila Josefowicz wanted to stretch herself intellectually, emotionally and technically. She was attracted to the unpredictability of combining more familiar works, such as the Beethoven and the Ravel, with the uncharted territory of the Salonen and the Grey. “Not only does it continuously excite me to bring new compositions to inquisitive ears and be a voice of new music today,” she writes in the booklet text, “it is the idea of combining the newer with the older, the avant-garde and eclectic with the more traditional. I believe these elements exist and breathe together.”
Both Mark Grey’s ‘San Andreas Suite’ and Esa-Pekka Salonen’s ‘Lachen verlernt’ are written for unaccompanied violin. ‘San Andreas Suite’ was composed for Josefowicz and explores dark and light sonorities using different rhythmic impulses. Inspired by early experiences in the composer’s native California, it acknowledges many different musical traditions woven into the state’s cultural fabric, hinting at rock, meditative, and Eastern music. ‘Lachen verlernt’ (‘Laughing unlearnt’) is basically a Chaconne or harmonic progression that repeats itself several times. Starting with a lyrical melody, the music becomes faster and more frenzied until it sounds as if the imaginary narrator has reached a state of utter despair. In a short Coda, the mini-drama ends peacefully.
