I feel Rosen belongs to that group of outstanding pianists, who while not being "great" in the sense of a Richter, Arrau, Anda or Michelangeli for example, manage to find a work or group of works in which the highest possible level of interpretation and performance is achieved. I find that with Gyorgy Sandor in Prokofiev. But nowhere more clearly than with Rosen in these late sonatas. I came across them after listening to the most popular and wide available recordings by pianists more famous many times over, but always felt something was lacking, vaguely dissatisfied. Not so much depth or heart...there is plenty of that on offer...but I mean understanding and control.
To my mind Rosen blends intelligence with great playing. The sound quality is just right for this challenging music...not the pneumatically sprung, deeply upholstered luxurious sound of say Telarc or Philips, but a plangent, brighter sound with real bite to carry forth Beethoven's musical arguments with maximum impact and clarity. The dramatic contrasts and dynamics in these recordings is really gripping, while the quiet passages achieve an atmosphere of quasi- religious ethereal hush and calm. Rosen's account of the Op 109 No 30 is heartstoppingly beautiful as well as powerful. I cannot bear to hear it played by any other pianist in any other way! Charles Rosen passed (I thought somewhat unremarkedly in the news) in December last year, 2012 a bad year for musicians' passing on, and the obituary accounts of a widely cultured man, academic writer as well as performer are there to read on the internet.
I cannot recommend this record too highly...it may seem pricey at £20 or more for 2 cds, but if you love Beethoven you will find these performances a life enhancing experience. That is good value for money.

If you want one set of the six late Beethoven sonatas, this is the one to get. The performances are deeply satisfying and the sound is excellent (Abbey Road studios, late 1960s).
Also, it is at a bargain price.

The reputation of the late Charles Rosen as a pianist has been eclipsed by his subsequent fame as a critic and theorist of music. These recordings remind one just how good he was in the last years of the vinyl era. Like many performers, he was not quite as good in front of a microphone as on his best evenings on the concert platform, but these are exemplary performances of his core repertoire. Any serious student of the late sonatas should have them.
