5.0 out of 5 stars One of the absolute finest recordings of Beethoven's 5th Symphony 27 April 2013
By Nimrod79 - Published on
Critical consensus has long acknowledged Carlos Kleiber's dynamic reading of Beethoven's 5th Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic as the finest on record. This powerful foray by George Szell with the same orchestra is just as wonderful, and features an even better account of the fourth movement. Szell matches Kleiber in terms of sheer drama, with a gripping performance of the first movement that is simply breathtaking. The orchestra plays with the tonal allure that has made it famous, but with an added level of rhythmic discipline that gives the symphony's many climaxes the drive and power they need. His account of the final movement is a case in point, with blazing brass and prominent timpani giving this ultimate statement of C Major the mixture of intensity, drive, and majesty required to balance the violent first movement.

The couplings are just as excellent. The Egmont Overture features wonderful portamento from Vienna's luxurious strings and the C Minor Concerto, performed with the wonderful Emil Gilels as soloist, features appropriately fierce and dramatic outer movements framing a tender and beautiful account of the central nocturne.

In short, this program serves as a fantastic embarrassment of riches, combining three of Beethoven's greatest heroic works, one of the greatest orchestras in the world, and one of the twentieth century's greatest conductors. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Live recordings from Salzburg vaults 2 Feb. 2015
By Hiram Gòmez Pardo Venezuela - Published on
Georges Szell (in the same line respect so many others conductors and soloists) worked out much better when he conducted live performances.

If you want to check that statement, please go for Beethoven's Fifth recorded with the Concertgebouw.

This Fifth is miles away the studio recording. Something in the air or the febrile temperament of Szell made the difference. Here, Szell impresses the Vienna, the accurate dramatic intensity that this Op requires. The result is a virile, majestic and incandescent register of the Fifth.

On the other hand, The Egmont is well performed too.(But keeping in mind the unsurpassable reading of Fricsay at the front of the BPO).

Finally, we have the distinguished, elegant and superbly well played Third Concert by the master Emil Gilels who experienced an extraordinary twist in his craft, (a dramatic bias around his way of playing) that made it possible gems of extraordinary artistic level such Mozart's 27 his Schubert (with Elena Gilels).

In sum, a document of relevant importance.

Don't miss it...
3.0 out of 5 stars It is not as great as I expected much more out of Gilels 19 May 2016

It is not as great as I expected much more out of Gilels. But Szell is good at what he does always with precision. Overall, it is not a great buy as I may or may not need another Beethoven 5 just for that sake alone.

If you already have several great concerto 3, you do not need this one.
