This is a pair of CDs well worth acquiring. All the performances are first class, and the recording does not betray its age. There are other recordings of these works that are as good, though I doubt if any are better, and certainly this is a collection that will have a wide appeal, and at the price it is unbeatable.

Long and short, it's just a very good recording. There's no point reviewing the actual pieces because everyone knows they are top-class. So...if you have any doubts, ignore them because this is a good buy.

Loved every performance. The Schubert especially is just gorgeous, a far better work than the overrated "Trout".
Don't miss these masterpieces.

Good performances with varied pieces.Three composers at the top of their form rounded off an interesting afternoon of chamber works.

HASH(0x9a140ad4) out of 5 stars Sparkling Performances 7 Jun. 2008
By David Douglass - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Nobody's just playing the notes on these recordings. Everything is phrased beautifully, with a perfect balance between vigor and elegance.

The digitally remastered late `60s recordings sound superb and at $8 for 2 CDs it's a must have!
HASH(0x9a140b28) out of 5 stars Skill, beauty and verve. 28 Sept. 2014

The Melos Ensemble has performed these unusual masterpieces beautifully. No spring chicken, I can "drift" a bit when listening to the traditional string quartet, but a septet or octet really focuses one's attention. Listening to either Beethoven or Mendelssohn is usually a pleasure; listening to these complex compositions played with passion and great skill is a sensual delight.

Excellent audio and who could ask for a better musical experience than having two Beethoven pieces, a Mendelssohn and a Schubert piece in the same package? I've heard these pieces live and this CD does not disappoint. Ard Caldwell

HASH(0x9a140cfc) out of 5 stars Value for money? 5 Jun. 2011
By Arnar - Published on Amazon.com

I'd give this CD 3,5 stars (if that option was available). In short, the performances are really good (not great in my view). The works themselves are all brilliant compositions with (perhaps) the exception of Beethoven's octet which falls into the shadow of his brilliant septet which is also included on this set.

Here, the question is not about the performances or the quality of the compositions. The only (but valid) reason to hesitate to buy this set has to do with the sound quality on this set. While the sound quality is not downright poor, it is far from ideal; the strings sound excessively thin and constricted and the accoustics overall are below average. Having said that, the violins never sound scratchy despite this and each group of instruments is easily recognisable (the sound is clear enough). The wind instruments sound more natural than the strings.

Interestingly, the oldest recording of the four recordings on this set offers the best sound quality. It is the recording of the wonderful Octet by Schubert. That one was done in 1968 but the other recordings were done in 1969 (Mendelsohn) and 1970 (the two Beethovens). The Beethoven recordings are the poorest in terms of sound quality.

In the final analysis, one gets what one is paying for here: very satisfactory performances of great works in a clear, albeit not rich, sound. However, in view of the sound quality shortcomings: One does not get anything more than one is paying for!

These four big, lush, romantic works are very well played by the Melos - this 2-CD set is a bargain.
