As an addition to my already lengthy shelves devoted to the Maestro, it was a good purchase. Like the previous reviewer, I had read Suchet's brilliant trilogy (during which I used the "Compendium" for reference) and a host of other texts peppered with all the names in this book, friends and acquaintances without whom, I suspect, a great deal of his music would not have been written. Not a very practical person, Beethoven relied on others to deal with many of the day-to-day practicalities of life, as they relied on him to raise their everyday lives to new heights.
This book contains their views on him gleaned from many sources and it is highly recommended.

Are you a Beethoven fan? whether you are or not (myself just recently discovering him through the ex news reader John Suchet's - yes poirot's brother - Trilogy of books on the Master, all 3 books each 600 pages somewhat, I could not put each one down) - you will adore this book. The picture of Beethoven on the front cover with its blue hue lends itself to not only the genius of the Composer, but rather the funny moments, as you cannot help but laugh at some of the memories his comtempories expounded. A very colourful picture is painted of his daily life, where and how he lived, his relationship with his contempories and you can imagine and recreate all the memories they hold. A full and frank account is given by those who knew him and it is quite obvious that they wanted the world to really know him, flaws and all; their recollections were clearly measured and considered, you will end up not only liking, but adoring him, not only for the beautiful music he so exquisitly gave to the world, but also for the very human man, who knew he had a special gift and needed to share it with the world.

HASH(0x8ed53168) out of 5 stars Interesting but ultimately not very revealing 9 Oct. 2000
By Itamar Ronen - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This nice little book presents us with a collection of writings on Beethoven by Beethoven's contemporaries. Among these one finds prominent musicians such as C.M.v. Weber, Gioacchino Rossini and even the very young Franz Liszt, great performers, close friends (e.g. Ferdinand Ries) and short-term visitors. Some of the encounters are well documented, whether some are somewhat controversial - such as the encounters with Bettina Brentano-von Arnim (as described in her letters to Goethe). Some of the material in this book is directly taken from Thayer's, and some of it from other sources. The documents shed light on the "visible" aspects of Beethoven the man, the composer and the performer. The writing, of course, is very subjective, however there's enough material through which one can construct a (very partial) view of Beethoven's personality. What one can not find in this book is a window to the mind of the creative genius that Beethoven was. Yes, some evidence is given as to the practical aspects of his writing - the famous notebook and the walks in the woods and so on, but for all the information given by these observers - the great riddle of how does the creative mind transform scattered musical ideas into a masterpiece - well, that will remain a mistery. Nevertheless - there's enough interesting information (in addition to the repetitive descriptions of the messy room and the harsh manners etc.) to make this book a reccomendable addendum to the library of whoever is interested in Beethoven and his work.

HASH(0x8ea9a2c4) out of 5 stars Beethoven by those who met him 28 Jun. 2013
By Meow Tomcat - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book was first published in 1926 to celebrate the Beethoven Centenary (1827-1927). This little book (231 pages, 5" x 7") was never intended to be a "contribution" to Beethoven scholarship and consequently there was no attempt to reconcile errors of memory, time, etc., with the conflicting facts. The 39 reminiscences, however, are drawn from established sources, mainly Thayer's Life of Beethoven. The short introductions orient the reader. These reminiscences show a consistency to Beethoven's character. This abbreviated coverage will satisfy many readers.

The 39 reminiscences of Beethoven are by: (1) Gottfried Fischer's story (2) Christian Gottlob Neefe (3) Mozart (4) Carl Ludwig Junker (5) Johann Schenk (6) Franz Gerhard Wegeler (7) Frau von Bernhard (8) Johann Wenzel Tomaschek (9) Carl Czerny (10) Countess Giulietta Guicciardi & Countess Therese Brunswick (11) Ignaz von Seyfried (12) Ferdinand Ries (13) Josef August Rockel (14) Baron de Tremont (15) Bettina von Arnim & Goethe (16) Ignaz Moscheles (17) Louis Spohr (18) Johann Wenzel Tomaschek (19) Cipriani Potter (20) Anton Schindler (21) Maurice Schlesinger (22) Sir John Russell (23) Rossini (24) Rochlitz (25) Wilhelmine Schroder-Devrient (26) Louis Schlosser (27) Edward Schulz (28) Franz Grillparzer (29) Weber (30) Liszt (31) Anton Schindler (32) Ludwig Rellstab (33) Sir George Smart (34) Gerhard von Breuning (35) Friedrich Wieck (36) Dr. Spiker (37) The End (38) The Funeral (39) Franz Grillparzer's Funeral Oration.

An excellent short volume with reminiscences from people who met and dealt with the great man. It is not comprehensive, but it certainly offers an insight into his general day to day life and illustrates the immense esteem he enjoyed amongst the cognoscenti of his day.

Enjoyable read of observations by those who knew or almost knew Beethoven. Some of these are original sources for scholars, but need scholarly interpretation to be fully appreciated and understood. Pleasant reading, but we also need to read more critical works, such as Thayer and modern analysts.
