I wanted some of the well-known sonatas such as Pathetique, Hammerklavier and Moonlight but I also wanted to get to know some of the others. This compilation hits the spot. Here there is a good range of sonatas right up to Beethoven's later sonatas that I had not heard before and the Waldstein, Tempest and Appassionata which I'd heard but did not know at all well. The playing is very good throughout and there are no obvious faults in the performances - I am really enjoying listening to and studying them all. At this price and quality, I doubt there is any competition. You'd need to buy one of the complete sets by a world famous pianist at a substantially higher price.

Oooh this is delicious. Every phrase tingles with energy and excitement. You can tell Kovacevich loves this music. And he has the technique to express that love convincingly. Each sonata I hear, I think 'this is even better than the last one.'

I would describe the playing as very clean and crisp, a little on the classical side in its coolness and clarity. No sentimentality here. Highly articulated playing, not worried about constant legato. Yet plenty of drama also.

Kovacevich's control of tone and colour is superb. His dynamic range is stunningly wide, he's not afraid to raise the roof when he wants to. He can just do anything he wants with this instrument, his command of it is so complete. He manipulates and shapes his phrases with a nonchalant ease. It's a joy to hear.

The instrument he is playing is gorgeous, and beautifully recorded. He's practically here in the room with me, or rather, I am let into his rather larger performance space. Feels like a recital hall, with the piano at a medium distance. Not intimate, but very very clear. I kind of like it.

Beethoven doesn't come any better than this.

Beautifully recorded and superb playing by Kovacevich of these masterpieces.I can add very little to the succinct and elegant review above. This is masterful playing and while different from the style of Brendel and Kempff (and my personal favourite Arrau), the playing resonates and has a wonderful clarity. Three CD's at this silly price (please Warner, as the successor to EMI, re-release the complete box set at a reasonable price) is a no brainer. Buy them now!
