Product Description

Product Description

Beethoven:Complete Piano Concertos <\i> Continuing with its series of major concerto recordings with Evgeny Kissin, EMI Classics will release the pianist's first ever complete cycle of Beethoven Piano Concertos in September this year. Kissin is partnered in these recordings by one of the master Beethovenians of our time, Sir Colin Davis, leading the London Symphony Orchestra. Recording the Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle is a momentous experience for any pianist. For generations the concertos have been the touchstone of an artist's maturity for their stylistic bridge from the classicism of Haydn and Mozart to the first flowering of Romanticism. Although Evgeny Kissin has performed these works numerous times over the years - and even recorded some of them previously - he waited until now to find the best possible musical environment in which to make this very personal statement. Recording Producer Jay Saks, who has worked closely with Kissin since his 1990 Carnegie Hall's debut, said of the project: "Recording the five Beethovens with Genya [Kissin] and Sir Colin was just wonderful. [It was] such beautiful playing, so musical and entirely in the character of Beethoven. It's not strange, not quirky, it's just astonishingly beautiful, technically proficient, musically extremely thoughtful - and profound. As a producer, I have to remember that I am present at recording sessions […] for professional reasons. It is so easy to just sit and listen and get swept away with what he's doing. These Beethovens are remarkable."

The conception that Kissin is a hard-hitting,relentless,dazzling virtuoso is dispelled by these performances which have considerable sensitivity, expressiveness and astonishing care for detail. Whether his tempo fluctuations (in the cause of expressiveness), for example, are stylistically authentic is perhaps questionable. The actual quality of piano playing is remarkable.

My favourite pianist plays my favourite music. The only thing is that the record quality is not perfect (rather poor balance between the soloist and the orchestra).

I have noticed that E Kissin has a tendency to play quite fast and that was again confirmed when compairing with Maurizio Pollini's recordings. Kissin plays the third movements in all these concertos faster than Pollini. In fact, the entire first concerto.

I have seen and heard Kissin live a number of times and found this too fast tempo style annoying. His interpretations are at times quite eccentric e.g. in the second movement of the fifth concerto where there are fifteen notes that are to be drilled. He stresses every note too much which destroys the delicacy that Beethoven wanted to achieve. Besides, Kissin's drills are uneven and not particularly good. Pollini plays this part the way it should be played and his drills are perfect.

Despite my objections I find this box very interesting to listen to and it gives value for money but I definitely prefer M Pollini's recordings.

Evgeny Kissin gives stunning performances on this CD. It cannot fail to uplift the spirits and fill the listener with enthusiasm. Hearing Kissin play these concertos is very energising.
