Product Description Review

From his days as a young conductor, using family money to buy himself orchestras, to his respected old age in the early stereo era, Thomas Beecham gave the music of Delius the sort of support that most composers dream of, giving the works many of their premieres and, after Delius's death, keeping his music in the public eye. This complete survey of his stereo recordings of Delius concentrates, for the most part, on the popular showpieces--but there was always going to be something special about delicious tone poems for small orchestra like On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring and Summer Night on the River when played by a conductor who had loved them deeply for 50 years. As well as Delius lollipops like Sleigh Ride, Beecham gives us the more radical side of the folk-song loving British impressionist--Brigg Fair and the Dance Rhapsody No. 2--and a fine version of the death-loving Dowson settings, Songs of Sunset, with the sometimes neglected contralto Maureen Forrester. --Roz Kaveney

This is surely the greatest Delius collection ever issued. I personally have bought records and reissues of these recordings since 1961. This is a fine transfer of magical performances.

5.0 out of 5 stars Of course this is one of the supreme glories of recorded music. 6 Aug. 2016

Oh Please - do not for a moment give one ounce of credence to the ridiculous comment posted by "Jill". She obviously has never heard this disc and has no knowledge on which to base such a senseless, irrelevant remark. As every Classical music lover on earth knows, this 2-disc set is one of the supreme glories of recorded music. Beecham's feel for Delius is unsurpassed, and considering the age of the recordings, EMI's stereo sound is little short of miraculous.

Buy this disc, sit back, and luxuriate in some of the most glorious music-making, and music recordings, of our lifetime.
