Synopsis

The story of a network of independent Evangelical Protestant congregations in the U.S. who in the 1970's discovered ancient Orthodox writings and were drawn into communion with the modern day Orthodox Church. What a book! Hardly the expected 20th century answer for nearly two-thousand-year-old questions: how do we worship as the Body of Christ, what do we believe? The author and his colleagues' search ended at Orthodox doors and this book chronicles carefully the process there and the process after. The reader is yanked in immediately and finds clear, careful, exciting recounting. I'm not Orthodox by the way; I ordered this because my daughter-in-law is.

Peter Gilquist reveals in this book a deep hungering for spiritual truth, and a deeper Christian experience. The book is a journal of his pilgrimage from evangelical Protestantism, to evangelical Orthodoxy. Evangelical Orthodoxy is something I considered impossible until I read this book. This book is not a polemical argument against Protestantism, but rather a wonderful travel log of his spiritual journey .

Nothing but kudos and congratulations on a wonderful book, perfectly geared for Americans wishing to know more about the Orthodox Church. Christianity in the United States tends towards appreciating 'conversion stories' (actually, it's a phenomon in the Orthodox Church as well, but of a different ethos), and if you are an American looking into the Orthodox Church, this book will give you a small taste of what to expect, and will inspire you to go forward.

On one hand the book shows and documents the rationale of why the Orthodox Church is the Church of the Apostles, the true Church of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Faithfull to its roots. On the other hand, it presents the openess of the Antiochian Orthodox to those looking back for the old original true Catholic Orthodox Apostolic Church. The high rating is well deserved for this book. Make this book the top choice in your shopping list.
