4.0 out of 5 stars Afascinaa 18 Mar. 2017

A fascinating new approach, using the concept of genetic influence and family history's influence on a person's character and personality and showing that a woman is never too old for growth and development . The author does this in a compelling manner, using fantasy and dream interpretation.
ThAfascinaae characters are well developed and the story has a compelling pace. I was well entertained.
5.0 out of 5 stars Who were those people?!? 27 April 2014

What a delightful read! The last two chapters had me laughing out loud and afterwards, it left me thinking about my own life. I wasn't sure how I'd like this book, what with its visitors from the past and all, but now I'm so glad I read it. It did what I love best in a book - it gave me characters I'm glad I invited into my life and it stayed with me afterwards.

Jessie Belle seems intent on learning things the hard way (ah, don't we all sometimes!), but learn she does. Her ancestors and the times they were from really got me wondering about my own ancestors and what their daily lives were like. But the line that's stuck with me is "Maybe she needed to start paying more attention to what was going on around her and less to what was going on inside her own head." Because learning about the past is all about appreciating the gift of this very moment. Jessie Belle gave me insight into both and I thank her for that.

Read Becoming Jessie Belle! You'll be glad you invited her into your life.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great southern novel. I loved it! 18 Aug. 2016

I loved this book. Reading it was pure fun from the first page to the last. I am a Georgia girl myself and found Jessie Belle's southern mannerisms and dry wit both endearing and lough out loud funny. Jessie Belle's Mama was priceless! The plot has you traveling back thousands of years and visiting ancient cultures that both fascinates and sparks your interest to learn more as the story unfolds. This was my first Linda Hughes novel and I was thrilled to learn that I have several more to enjoy. A wonderful book, very well written and I highly recommend it. Do a friend a favor; buy them a copy o Becoming Jessie Belle, which I plan o do. Janie Blackwood
5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Journey! 19 Jun. 2014

The story is reminiscent of The Tales of Christmas Past, with a guide leading Jessie Belle into a dream world of ancestors past as she sleeps. During the day, Jessie Belle faces the decisions that young women in their 20s encounter that shape their existence for their remaining lives--a career based on money or inner satisfaction, a relationship with a man based on wealth and power or a relationship with a man based on heart, a life based on mamma's wishes or a life based on one's own wishes. These internals struggles combined with the nightly hauntings take the reader on a journey with Jessie Belle, one of remembrance of one's life during this same time period, and one of the lovely jaunts of this well-developed character. Although fresh with moments of great tongue in cheek hilarity, this work made me pause and reflect on what my own ancestry could possibly mean in my own life's vision. Enjoyable read!
5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoying Jesse Belle 25 Mar. 2014

Becoming Jesse Belle was a very enjoyable read. The plot was unusual--Jessie Belle's on an "Ancestry Quest" to discover her family's genetic heritage. The story moves her from her family's origins in Africa through Europe and on to Ireland. Along the way she encounters amazing women from her past who lived hundreds of years ago but whose stories help shape Jesse in completely unexpected ways. She goes from being an indulged and pampered girl to an interesting woman. And along the way she gets to meet a good man, the cameraman who is recording her journey. A delightful novel.
