It wasn't until last week when I decided to check through some of my authors to see if I had overlooked any new releases, when I looked up Skye Turner I couldn't believe it.. Becoming James Black was staring at me!
I quickly downloaded it with a view of reading it straight away but I needed a refresh, I couldn't help myself, I had to read James Black again before reading Becoming James Black, it was well worth it.
The storyline throughout both books completely captivates you and as I was reading the first book I was sort of remembering what was going to happen next but it didn't spoil things at all because the way Skye Turner tells it and portrays James, AJ, Scarlet and Hugo's characters and what they're thinking and the way everything is detailed just leaves you wanting more and you realise just how good James Black is and as it ended I was so glad I was going straight onto Becoming James Black.
Becoming James Black gave us all our answers, it was a very compelling, sad and a brutal read, the situation James found himself in at 3yrs old was truly heartbreaking especialy as you could feel how it affected Sam who at the time didn't know James but little did we know he would eventually play an important role in his life, they had a great relationship and I wished Sam could of been his real Dad but he was as good as.
We learnt how Scalett met Hugo and then came into James life and that was through another very sad situation but they would never have met otherwise.Read more ›
To get the story behind James and how Jaye and Rose became James and Scarlett, was brilliant and very emotional. Even though its fiction this sort thing used to happen and probably still does which is heartbreaking.
Another 5 stars for Skye

The characters are so real, it's as if you are right there with them. I must warn you, be prepared to cry, the subject matter is deep and dark but so very real. So find a quite corner and settle in because you won't be able to put this book down until you finish it. This book is a definite must read!!!!
These characters are so real. You root for the good ones and want to shoot the bad ones. I felt what they felt. When they cried, I cried. When they were scared, I was scared. When they were happy, so was I. This book is an absolute MUST read. Get ready to feel some serious emotion and when it hits you, just let it out. That's what I did.
BJB is unlike any other book of Skye’s I’ve ever read, and in a good way. I think it is her best work to date. I have read other ‘back stories’ that felt chopped up and thrown together by having large jumps in time, but in BJB, I almost forgot it was a back story. The characters were believable and the storyline is one that almost could be ripped from today’s headlines. How these young children handled themselves was commendable and made me love their characters even more. It also proves that you should never let your situation and circumstances define who you are and what your future holds.
James and Scarlett suffered greatly at the hands of those put in place to protect them. Skye took a subject that is not easy to talk about and made you feel the emotions the characters must have felt during the most important years of their lives. This was a hard subject to read about and yet, you are hooked from the first page until the very last. The secondary characters were well written and had me clinging to every hope that they would also be able to withstand the cruelties they endured for years.
A definite must read.
Real life, horrible situations are displayed in detail and will crush you.
You will find yourself rooting for the best when there seems to be no hope. Kudos to Skye Turner for writing about such touching subjects. Through it all I felt she grew so much as a writer. This is saying alot since I've thought all of her stories have been brilliant. This one is different. Brilliant doesn't begin to describe this one.
In the first book we meet James and learn he has a huge secret. In this book, we learn more about that secret as this is his and Scarlet childhood story.
It was a very profound book that had lots of elements that may disturb some readers, but I personally think it is an amazing story that touches on subjects that society tends to shy away from.
