Mia's writing pulls every emotion out of you, leaving you breathless, emotional and stunned into silence.
I did find the beginning a little slow but as the story develops I realised that is because we need to understand the depth of Calder and Eden's feelings from a very early age.
This is a story of love against all the odds, a love so deep it should last a lifetime but that would be too simple. I Love that Mia's stories are always feature usual parts of our society but they are striving to find love and acceptance.
Loved the characters of Calder, Eden and Xander there naviety, strength and courage is awe inspiring .
I hated the character of Hector with a passion wishing him a slow and painful death on more one occasion. Not many books can bring me to tears but this book did more than once.
After that shocking ending I'm going to dive straight into Finding Eden, I need to know what happens next .
Another amazing read from one amazing author - a must read !
I feel a little stupid once i realised what the plot to this book was. When i first added this to my tbr list awhile ago, i thought it was going to be some sort of a dystopian-kinda book. Then when i read the synopsis properly, i thought, oh....it's about some homeless people. Then, when i got about 6% into the story, i realised none of these things were the case. This is in fact about a religious-cult set in the middle of the Arizona desert. It tracks the lives of Calder - a young boy of 10ish in the beginning and Eden - a young girl brought into the cult as an orphan, up until them being 17-18 years old, when of course they have fallen in love.
This love is forbidden though, since she is promised by the Gods to the leader of the cult - Hector. Not only that, Hector believes that once he has taken Eden for his wife when she turns 18, that they will all be taken to Elysium when the 'Great Floods' came. Basically......Hector is a nutcase who has brain-washed all the people in the camp into believing he is some prophet, sacred to the Gods, alongside his council members. How convenient that these Gods 'blessed' him and his council with all the luxuries of modern day technology, but the other workers in the camp have to go without such things....TV, running water, proper food etc. Grrrrrrh! It very much had an 'Animal Farm' vibe about it which made me grit my teeth often.
Aside from that though, the blossoming love between Eden and Calder is just heart-melting. They are young, but it is no less intense. The ending was gripping....just amazing and pushed this 4-4.5 star book to 5. I cant wait to see how this pans out.
Great work again by this author!
It's about forbidden love, friendship, faith and strength, the human heart standing against evil and believing that truth and love will find a way. Having the courage to question what is right and what is horribly wrong. It's about surviving.
When the story begins Calder is ten, and Eden a little younger…. The reader journeys with them as they both grow into 18 year old young adults on the cusp of self discovery about their feelings and beliefs. They begin to question everything they've ever believed to be true.... The prophesy of Hector is looming.
Being in the minds of these characters is fascinating....
Calder is just divine. He's strong, kind, brave, tender, ambitious. He has dreams and aspirations and an immense capacity to love. He's book hero gorgeous and lights up the page with his character.
Eden is beautiful, innocent, strong, naive, resistant. She's the best combination for a heroine, offering depth, personality and intrigue. She has only one enforced purpose in life but fate has other ideas. Her situation left my heart aching....
Xander is the voice of reason and sense. Calder's best friend and his salvation in the crazy.
Maya, Calder's sister…. Such an emotional part of the story. Her, “…extra chromosome was filled to bursting with love.”
Acadia is a place in America, 20 years in the making, it's Hector's twisted empire. I felt the air of discomfort surrounding him and was repulsed at the thought of all he intended. It shows the disparages between the classes... Those who get the easy options and those who have to work for every single thing.Read more ›
