Curious about all the fuss made about Beats headphones, I borrowed a pair of these for a few days from a relative, they're big into beats having owned a few models, so I made them part with them for a few days "testing"

I can say, that the title of the review pretty much sums it up for me. I wouldn't call myself a high level Audiophile, but I do take my audio listening quality a bit more seriously, but not the extreme levels some do.
I put the Beats through my Asus Xonar sound card, which is capable of very good quality audio definition, as well as tonal seperation..this takes no prisoners are far as accoustics are concerned, you do notice a big difference from the cheaper nasty offerings to genuine higher quality headphones/speakers. I would add I've used a few of the more expensive Sennheiser's and a few other makers with higher end offerings.

I'll sum things up quickly

Pros:

+ Build is ok, better but certainly not £250's worth in my view. They feel sturdy enough but the plastics don't feel high end (bit cheap) and the ear cups don't have the same level of quality I would expect at this price (not sure how they would hold up)
+ I found them pretty comfy overall not too heavy well balance and felt decent on the "ears"
+ Noise cancelling works well, not the absolute best I've used but respectable, built in battery to charge which is probably more convenient for some

Cons:
- Over aggressive bass response, even dropping the EQ down the bass is overly emphasised
- Harsh upper mid and high end
- Mediocre tonal response/seperation not suited to general music listening

I listen to quite a large variety of music from pop, heavy metal, rock, 80's, soul, classical, funk you name it.

I had high hopes for these after listening to the over ear Studio pro's in a Tesco recently. The sound is pretty good when plugged into my iphone 5c.

Mine have 2 problems, the first being that one of the battery terminals doesn't marry with the battery properly and causes the headphones to stop working intermittently and secondly my girlfried could hear what tracks I was playing down in the kitchen as I listened up in the bedroom ! As I purchases these to use while out and about and travelling on planes etc I don't think they will suitable. The build quality leaves a little to be desired too, with the plastic left circular plate with the "b" on it is difficult to get on and off to insert the batteries.

If these Beats Studio is advertised for studio use, then it's a joke. It leaks lots of sound that will be bleed into microphones, its sound is not detailed enough for professional mixing, and it's bass is too muddy and exaggerated making these a bad reference.

However, I have to say these are very stylish looking headphone that the teenagers and trendy people like. I do admire Beats for making headphones a desired headphone, a fashion statement and accessory. They are advertised extremely well, with strong endorsements and products placement everywhere. However, being a headphone, it's primary function should be it's audio performance.

Sound quality wise, they are certainly better than the stock Apple white earbuds. However you are comparing to a £1 headphone. Not really a fair comparison. When you are comparing to professional studio headphones in this price range of the Beats Studio, it's a losing battle. The Beats Studio is by no mean an awful headphones, however professional headphones such as the Denon D2000, Audio Technica M50, Beyerdynamic DT 770, AKG K550 etc, these Beats just don't match up acoustically. A studio musician would never use a headphone with active noise cancelling built in, because this lowers the resolution and colours the sound. These are all substantially higher resolution and detailed compared to the Beats, with better instrument separation, soundstage and neutrality. A trendy alternative for the Beats Studio is the Denon D400 headphones, which has a built in amp and arguably more fashionable and attention grabbing. The D1100 headphone which can be know bought for less than £70 is another superior headphone in term of sound quality, with a better bass response, bigger soundstage richer mids and clearer highs.

Love these. They look really good and the sound quality is great despite what some people say. The only problem I had was that when plugged into my laptop (a sony) they had a buzzing in the background which I found out was because my laptop wasn't an apple product and something to do with the compatibility. However I did not have this problem with my new laptop (a samsung) - there was no annoying background buzzing noise.

The product looks great and the sound is very good but I cant undertstand the justification of such a high price. Are we simply paying for the brand name? I think so.
Purchased for my teenager for Christmas. Not my idea.

They're comparable in sound quality and engineering standards to a £30/40 pair of anonymous headphones from any superstore! Since 2006, Beats has been a brand name on mediocre quality products. The Chinese telecom manufacturer HTC became the major shareholder in 2010. There's no denying the brand has been brilliantly marketed, addressing a previously unexploited consumer niche with the help of celebrities such as Dr Dre, Gaga, Bieber, Diddy et al. The use of glossy colours and tidy aesthetics has helped endear Beats to a certain type wishing to look "cool".

There's nothing wrong with that if it's important to you but, for considerably less, a huge leap in sound quality can be had from the likes of Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, AKG, Klipsch. Even more modest cans from Sony or Philips will outperform the Beats products. Compared to any of these, the reproduction sounds muffled with a huge loss of clarity.

As an analogy, think of beers; the most popular are unremarkable brews that have been glamorously and expensively marketed but there are better-tasting alternatives out there.

Finally, the pretentious model name; has anyone ever seen a pair of Beats in a recording studio? I certainly haven't but don't they look good?
