Product description

Product Description

Jazz; rock n roll; blues; music hall; guitar instrumentals; tin pan alley; rockabilly; dance band; soul; bolero; skiffle; trad; R&B; country; old-time; Broadway; doo-wop; folk; high school pop; Motown - the Beatles early influences are so wide-ranging that the Beatles Beginnings series of discs could quite easily pass for an introduction to the history of twentieth century popular music. This repertoire enabled them to perform in many different settings jazz clubs, strip clubs, folk clubs, working men s clubs, church dances, rock n roll joints. Music had to be tailored to the occasion and the Beatles great enthusiasm for popular music of all kinds enabled them to do this. Almost all of the songs they learned were released in the UK and from 1957 onwards, they avidly followed the weekly music charts and kept up to date with the records that did not make the hit parade. Before naming the Beatles in the summer of 1960, they were the Quarrymen. Here are the 100 or so songs they are documented as having performed along with a few of their teenage party pieces with which they would entertain family and friends.

I bought this here from a reseller who mistakenly sent me the wrong item. Mistakes happen, and the customer service in resolving the matter was excellent. I would buy from them again.

I did want this collection still, so I bought it directly from the man behind the series, Nick Duckett at historyofrnb.ne. I wanted the entire Beatles Beginnings series, and the only volume I was missing was Vol 2: Quarrymen, which is hard to get now. Many of the songs on that set are found here as well, so for £15.00 (about $19 currently + $6 shipping), I got this plus a 5th CD. Nick's a great guy with a passion for compiling and producing historically-significant collections related to R&B, jazz, and rock history, and I'm planning to buy more of his other CDs at a later date.

What you get here and through the rest of the BB series are the original records that the Beatles were inspired to either perform live as the Quarrymen, or to shape their early sound. Nick's liner notes are always interesting even for the Beatles scholar ("geek") such as myself.

Bear in mind, if you're a collector of classic 1950s rock and roll, you'll probably have many of these songs (and possibly remastered better than these versions) already. Lots of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and Little Richard. What makes this collection worth getting anyway isn't the songs themselves but the collection as a whole. Included are some odd 1940s and 50s records interspersed especially on the first two disks, songs that are THE versions that the group heard, and that you may or may not have heard or known about yourself. As a Beatles fan, listening to this, and the rest of the Beatles Beginnings series, you can start to hear the Beatles performances and influence.

At the very least, it's a great collection of music, Beatles or not, at a very reasonable price.
