The debut single from Nicola Roberts serves as a great first solo outing. With fantastic production from Diplo; Nicola's sing-rap style and cheerleader chorus fuse beautifully with the marching drum beats and will firmly cement itself in your mind with the great 'L.O.V.E' hook. A brilliantly odd diplo tinged slice of heaven that marks the beginning of a great solo career for Nicola. It is worth noting that the itunes pre-order came with the beautiful B-side Porcelain Heart which is more in line with her signature electro ballads in Girls Aloud, her vocals on this are truly stunning and definitely worth a listen. All signs point towards a thrilling debut album.

As most long standing fans of Girls Aloud like myself will know, Nicola Roberts has always been something of a misunderstood enigma during her 7 years with the other girls. But for some reason, jointly with Sarah Harding, she's always been my favourite member. Sure, she's not had the LA lifestyle of Nadine Coyle or the superfame that Cheryl Cole has had since they went 'on a break' in 2009, but even before we knew she was to release solo material I saw potential in her as a great lyricist and vocalist, in particular her solos on 'Sexy! No No No...' and 'Whole Lotta History' and her two co-written album tracks - 'I Say A Prayer For You' on 'What Will The Neighbours Say?' and 'It's Magic' on Chemistry.

Which is why, when I heard 'Beat Of My Drum' get played for the first time on Scott Mills' Radio 1 show, that I knew immediately that it was a solo record by her. It's got her stamp all over it but it's ballsy, rebellious and witty enough as the songs she and the girls did with Xenomania. Dare I say it, her material on this single alone is probably more spiritually akin to Girls Aloud than anything any of the other girls have released solo thus far. True, she's not actually worked with Xenomania, but working with Diplo, the man who has produced for the likes of M.I.A. and also Beyonce's latest single 'Run The World (Girls)', it still remains as forward thinking and provocative as the likes of 'Love Machine' and 'Biology' before it.

It certainly serves as a good indication for her album 'Cinderella's Eyes' that'll be out in October. And it's also, I feel, the best British pop single of 2011 so far, bar none. Not that she ever lost it, but finally Nicola's found her voice.

I love this song, people are hating on it because it is unique and nothing like what she used to sing, and it wasn't what they where suspecting instead they should give the song a chance it is really good!
