Ever since I was a twelve-year-old child, when I walked into a room and saw just a few seconds of TBW on a vhs rental tape my brother was watching - it stuck in my mind. Also, the scene in question was of Michael searching the basement! Just a few seconds seen and it made quite the impression on me growing up...Watching TBW now and it's actually quite languidly paced, directed by the documentary filmmaker Philippe Moira, who maintains the slow tempo until the finale's special effects sequences, which do not disappoint. An old school '80's horror presented with impeccable blu ray picture and sound.

First of all, this is not a film that everyone will enjoy - it has a slow burning story and builds up to the gore with slow, darkly shot and suspenseful scenes. If you are expecting something fast-paced, then try to put those expectations aside - let the story unfold at its own pace and the pay-off is much greater.

Arrow have done an outstanding job with this release, presenting the film uncut with beautiful audio and picture (offering both HD and SD versions of the film). The image is sharp, as with many Arrow releases, and the uncompressed audio sounds wonderful (turn your TV up loud and you can really hear the leaves crunch). The presentation is flawless, considering the film came out over 30 year ago.

The array of special features covers a lot of ground for those wishing to learn more about 'The Beast Within', and includes a nice little collector's booklet (I say little, it's actually 45 pages in length!).

For fans of 80's horror or cult cinema in general, this release is worth the money - especially if you know what you are getting into. As mentioned above, the film is not for everyone - as other reviews have pointed out, the story would never win any awards. It is however original and entertaining enough to maintain interest, and ends up being a pretty fun 98 minutes.

If you're considering buying this release, the chances are you already know what to expect ("one absolute beast of a monster movie!"), and for those blind buyers - keep an open mind, you might be surprised! I wanted to release the beast within my pants after seeing this in HD.

The Beast Within came at a time where the werwolf movie was all the rage, and the likes of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON and THE HOWLING meant that this little monster got forgotten about somewhere along the line. Now The Beast Within is far from perfect, badly edited at times, some lulls and almost laughable content that is not intentional. Paul Clemens who plays the teenage werewolf isn't that striking as an actor and doesn't add any special to his character. His mother played by the usually good Bibi Besch just isn't horror film material and it feels she didn't get the genre she was playing in. But there are still standout actors here. Ronny Cox steals the show as the sons worried dad frantically trying to find out why his son is ill and retracing his steps. The lovable LQ Jones plays the sheriff, like he was born to play sheriffs and Don Gordon is great as the slimeball judge in small town America.

The Beast Within doesn't always feel like a straight werewolf movie and actually has hints of Dr Jekyll and Hyde and or a possession type film. The movie seems open ended but a sequel never followed. Oh and watch out for the finale transformation scene it may not be the best you've ever seen but it is fairly disgusting. All in all The Beast Within is a little silly but pulls it all off with some memorable performances, and hardly a dull moment to be had.

If you love 80's classic horrors then this one is ripe for the collection, a very obscure but brilliant movie, the storyline is very 80's, basically a couple break down in the middle of nowhere one night, Eli (Ronny Cox) goes to get help and while he's away his wife gets attacked and raped in the woods by a mysterious figure, cut 17 years later they had the baby and raised it, but something is not right and trouble starts up when they go back to where it started to find out the truth, there is plenty of bloody moments in this movie and some nice gore images in places, the creature/monster make-up effects are brilliant, top notch for the time it was made, the movie has a fantastic score, very erratic creepy music, the cast is all good, overall its a classic 80's horror with all the right ingredients, worth adding to the Arrow collection now it has a great Blu-ray.

Blu-ray picture looks great in HD 1080 (Arrow video) plus you get the DVD version.
Features include a commentary, making of 45-mins, plus more.
Collectable booklet of info about the movie, 12 pages of text plus images.
Reversible cover with original art.
Region B,2, 98-mins UNCUT, 1981

The beast Within was and is never going to win many awards. It's a competently made horror film hailing from 1982. The acting, for the most part, is fine with Ronny Cox coming out as the pick of the bunch. Personally I found Paul Clemens, who plays the starring part, a tad weak.
Despite all this Arrow Video have, once again, done this film proud. The print is completely uncut and the picture and sound are superb. Featured on the disc is an audio commentary by director Philippe Mora and a making of documentary. Also included is 'Storyboarding The beast Within' plus the original trailer. The package is rounded out with a nice booklet illustrated with stills form the film and, of course, a reversible sleeve so you can choose what image you display.
To be honest the film probably does not deserve such royal treatment but that's what Arrow do and that's why their discs are always worth buying.
