I first heard about this story when it was mentioned within another story, and so, intrigued, I read this. It's tricky at first to lose yourself in this outdated style of writing, yet after a few attempts, I finally fell into it and was swept up in the story of John Marcher. Maybe this is a warning against arrogance and egotism, as May with her quiet little disposition knows Marcher's fate before him though realising it is so terrible, refuses to tell him and wishes he will never know it. A heartfelt tale of a wasted life, that could have been filled with so much more if only Marcher had partaken in the world rather than simply observing it.

I would recommend this novella to anybody interested or studying queer theory or gender studies. There is so much that can be interpreted through what is not said.
