Speaking of Shelly, it would take me a while to think of the last time I came across a character as complex as herself. Credit to Penny, she took care and attention with her in the way she was written. In some ways I think she used Beaus character as a device to ask the questions I as a reader and person wanted know.
The revelations in this story are not Shelly’s alone; Beau too experiences some life changing moments and in these moments of Beau’s vulnerability, it’s wonderful to see Shelly blossom and showcase personal develop.
I’m in awe of Penny’s ability to write a swoon worthy romance whilst concurrently tackling serious current issues. Beard in Mind is conscientious and thought provoking romance which was nicely balanced by its comedic value and heart fluttering feels.
I can’t get enough of this band of bearded brothers and am looking forward to what’s in store next.
The book now focuses on Shelley and Beaus relationship with Shelleys ocd part of but not all of the story, her condition and indeed her character is treated with respect and consideration.
Penny's writings allow for us readers to penetrate the story on so many levels and I love to read her books a few times to gain extra insight into her varied and amusing characters.
Well done for another beautiful sole wrenching novel.
I devoured this story. Beau is the likeable, easy going brother, but with so much warmth and empathy. How he loves Shelly is just hear warming. The only minor criticism being, I would of loved slightly more of Shelly's back story. I would of liked to of known how all of her OCD began.
However, without doubt a Penny has done it again. The only down side now being she has ruined me for all other books, I tried starting a book straight after but it just failed in comparison.
I loved the Knitting In The City books and I love the Winston brothers books.
In the other Winston books Beau seemed the least interesting of the siblings but I was wrong to think that. The story of Beau and Shelly is compelling.
Truthfully, this is not my favourite Winston book but it is still very good and by any other writer it would probably be a 5 star read but this series sets the bar high.
This story is about acceptance, courage and being brave. Letting people be and letting people grow. Accepting that humans are complex creatures and that they are more than their physical attributes or their behaviours or patterns.
Everyone should give this book a chance at the least. Recommended for all who enjoy well developed characters, kick add heroines and gentlemen hero!
