This xmas I bought this book on the back of the success of The Bear with the Sticky Paws and it has delivered again. We love it! I have also looked at "The Bear With the Sticky Paws who wont go to School" but for some reason this is showing as much more expensive!? Will likely buy it anyway though so that shows my keeness on these books.
He's a naughty bear and he causes chaos which children love but at the end of the story there's also a non direct "message" about not being naughty and how a cuddle from mammy is/can be the best thing in the world!
This review is for the 'ORCHARD BOOKS' large hardback edition, measuring approximately 26.5cm x 24.5cm.
Durable hardback covers open to 30 high quality pages about a rather stubborn little girl called PEARL, who likes to be..... well........negative, especially when it is time to go to sleep.....for she is much TOO BUSY!
That is, until 'that bear' arrives on the doorstep...with his suitcase.....and soon makes it quite clear that he is NOT keen on the idea of BEDTIME, either!
In fact, quite the opposite as it turns out, as the duo indulge in a bit of:-
bouncing on the bed
and the bear stands on his head .......
and then.........a BIG ADVENTURE begins......
as they soar off in search of the aforementioned 'PARTY-TIME', with sticky paws everywhere..........just for a change!
Although all this riotous activity happens in a very short period of time... by the end, Pearl is surprisingly keen to settle down for the night:-
'..."A little bit sleepy," says Pearl.
"NOT SLEEPY!" says the bear.....', in his typically limited way!
The text is in a variety of fonts and suitably enhanced in places, FOR EFFECT!
Example of text:-
'There's a girl called Pearl and she's very wide awake.
"I'm really really busy and I'm not going to sleep!"
"I'll put this all away," says Mum, "ready for tomorrow, and tuck you up."......'
Beautifully illustrated throughout, the seemingly simple pictures are packed with further discussion opportunities, including spotting 'the cat' (who features throughout the series), a bit of reverse counting (saving the best 'til last!).....and a hint at the art of sharing......
or not as the case is...
.....with the rather selfish bear in control!
This super book follows on from The Bear with Sticky Paws, also available as a neat little gift:-
The Bear with Sticky Paws Suitcase Set, containing a little plush bear
The Bear with Sticky Paws Goes to School.
Every so often, something that little bit different comes along, and, ..... I have to admit it......I simply love this series of books!
True classics in the making (in my opinion), by Clara Vulliamy - daughter of Shirley Hughes.

Many schools use AR testing to help children grow in their reading abilities here in Mesa Arizona. This is a playful book for young readers, and enjoyable.
The book is about a little girl who does not want to go to bed. After telling her mother firmly that she will not go to bed, and beginning to stall, the bear with sticky paws enters the picture and takes the girl on a magical journey to a tropical paradise. There, we count beach party items (down from 10 colorful drinks to 1 of something) and the bear tires the little girl out. Finally she falls asleep and her mother cheerfully kisses her goodnight.
It is a wonderful fantasy for a child that doesn't want to go to bed, and it's certain to appeal to all but the most literal-minded child. The illustrations are fun and the writing is fair.
I can't say I understand what the purported "lesson" was since, barring an actual flying miniature polar bear in my house, this is not in any way going to help my child go to sleep, or for me to appreciate her refusal to go to sleep. I also thought that the counting section in the middle of the book, while an interesting bridge, was out of place.
I'm sure this book will please children who are fond of the bear with sticky paws, but there are so many books out there that I wouldn't go out of my way to choose this one.
Together Lily and the bear go on an adventure. They fly into the air on her bed over treetops and chimneys. They ride a wave and land on a beach. Bear has drinks, ice cream sundaes and sweet treats. Lily makes sandcastles, pebble faces and patterns out of pretty shells. They dance and swirl but Lily starts to get a little sleepy and decides it's time for bed but not before one last good night kiss from mom.
This is a delightful story for kids. It is also a great counting story. The illustrations of colorful and fun and really bring this story to life.
