Our heroine is Marnie Appleton. The sweet shop has been in her family for years and she likes running it but somehow she thinks she would prefer to run away and go travelling. The grass is always greener and all that. I liked Marnie a lot. She's kind and caring and missing her ex, Alex, who went away to work in New York.
Karen Clarke is brilliant at characters. She writes them in such a way that I can easily imagine them, what they will say, do, feel. One of my favourite characters has to be Josh who turns up looking for a job. He seems like a classic beach bum sort, still skateboarding at 25 and drifting around, but I just thought he was brilliant and so much fun.
This book had me chortling away many times. It's really funny. Right from the first page it had me smiling at an exchange between Marnie and the sweet supplier. There's some really clever dialogue. And whilst it's a light read, as you might expect from the cover and the subject matter, it also has depth and emotion. It had my mouth watering from all the mention of confectionary, it made me feel annoyed by an attention seeker looking for any reason to make a splash and ruin Marnie's reputation, and it had me laughing out loud at some of the witty situations and exchanges.
I wanted to put myself right into this book. I wanted to be behind the counter of the sweet shop, I wanted to stroll to Bob's Bakery at lunchtime for a chicken baguette and I wanted to sit and eat it looking out to sea. Alas, I had to make do with imagining it between the pages of this book which was the next best thing.
There are lots of coffee shop/cupcake/sweet shop/seaside type books, which is not to say that there are too many of them, but I do think this one is a standout one for me and I'm really looking forward to reading the next one in the beachside series, The Beachside Flower Stall. I hope some of the sweet shop characters reappear.
A fabulous candy cane of a read. I absolutely loved it (can you tell?).
As a certified sweetie lover this drew me in instantly! I have owned shops and coffee shops since leaving University and I absolutely love reading about people in retail, serving customers, making cappuccinos, ringing things through the tills etc, as it’s been a huge part of my life and I can relate to it.
The Beachside sweetshop was a gorgeous read, a great mix of likeable characters, a sprinkle of intrigue as to their relationships, romance and SWEETS!! 🍬🍬🍬It’s light hearted and full of humour that will make you either smile and chuckle to yourself throughout. I was sad to say farewell at the end to characters who felt they had become friends but it certainly left a smile on my face.
If you are looking for an easy read, perfect to curl up with a cuppa tea or a glass of wine after a long day at work this is perfect. I think it’s also think it would make a great holiday read when you don’t want anything too taxing, that you can dip in and out of without losing your thread.
As we watch Marnie negotiate the return of her ex boyfriend, her errant mother and deal with overly touchy feely sweet suppliers as well as fame hungry ex model bloggers determined to close you down. Not to mention a shop revamp its like watching your favourite ‘friends’ episode, there’s plenty going on, it’s fast paced and funny! I was rooting for Marnie to make a success of the shop, and to rekindle her relationship with Alex when he returns to Shipley… It’s definitely a heartwarming tale of family, friendship and overcoming some of the obstacles life can throw at you, and I enjoyed every page of it…
Its a glorious little bit of escapism, and a breath of much needed fresh air after reading twenty twisty turns psychological thrillers, this was a welcome respite from murdererous stalkers and abusive psychopaths!
I loved the nostalgic sweetie descriptions, the scenic seaside setting and Marnie made for a very likeable protagonist, I especially enjoyed her relationship with the heavily pregnant friend Beth, and some of the scenes where she goes into labour are hilarious!
Also the references to blogging and some of the posts and comments were really funny, so true to real life and superbly observed!
Well written and fun filled, I highly recommend. I purchased this from Amazon but am thrilled that Netgalley has just issued my request to read The beachside Flower stall By the same author, and I can’t wait to get stuck in…
It follows Marnie's tale in love and despair as she thinks her shop really is going to be closed down and is in the middle of a dramatic news story against her. Josh is on hand at the right time and offers to help Marnie out during this difficult time. However, soon tensions and attractions blossom which puts Marnie in a difficult space. She still loves her ex but after coming back to town with a new love, Marnie thinks it's time to move on but she finds it's more difficult than she thought.
This book really is spectacular and I found that I really couldn't put it down. I read it in about 2 days because I absolutely loved it. Can't wait to read The Beachside Flower Stall!
I was transported to the seaside town Shipley with a whole host of lovable and not quite so loveable characters (Isobel). It was the perfect book to curl up with and the pace the story moved at was perfect, making it easy to follow. I already have the beachside flower stall on order and I'm counting down the days to 13th of April. Another wickedly wonderful rom-com Karen, it's pure escapism at its very best.
